Vom Brunhaus

by Vom Brunhaus on 09 November 2010 - 09:11

/hi, he was first diagnosed with food bloat and x rays were taken. Yesterday at my regular vet more x rays were taken and the tube was tried without success. From x rays vet said blood is in the stomach spleen area and he removed some blood from stomach by needle. Vet said not bloat but internall bleeding. I brought him home and will try to get some lite foods and water into him. Any advice? thanks in advance VB

Sounds to me he should be opened up and possibly is bleeding out from his spleen. Hemagiosarcoma? How old? Spleenic torsion is also something that occurs in the breed, however I don't think he'd last over night with that.

Good luck, but I would maybe see another vet?

I would suggest that you just do a Exploratory surgery on him. If your Vet tapped the belly and blood was drawn out then you need to figure out where he is bleeding from. How old his your dog? how long has this been going on?
My prayers are with you and your family that he makes a full recovery.  Let us know what happens

possible hemangiosarcoma on the spleen that has ruptured or is bleeding out.  Important to find out for sure, and if the dog is still in good condition perhaps he can be saved by removing the spleen.  Time is of the essense.  Good luck.

Thanks Robin, Molly, he had ultra sound this AM that detected some mass at the spleen and some at the liver. He is a strong German import from the work linie. He came home Vet is going to call Thurs. am and we will probably take him then. Just giving few days to get a little stronger as he improved Tue. Hes eating litely soup, cottage cheese & rice. Absolute Angel at the vets office, girls loved him very easy to work with. VB

I would think your vet would be a little more urgent than that, if there is blood in the abdomen - in my experience dogs go downhill quickly unless the source of the internal bleeding is fixed/removed/etc.  But, good luck whatever you do - hope he recovers well.

I TOTALLY agree with Molly.  This is a true emergency and your dog should NOT wait ANY further!  My Corgi showed these exact symptoms and I, too was going to wait but a good friend of mine told me she may not make it.  So, I immediately rushed her to the ER Vet.  Sure enough, her spleen had a mass on it, ruptured and was bleeding internally.  The ER. Vet said she would have never made it.  She was eleven at the time, and lived until 16!!!
God, PLEASE take your dog to the ER Vet!!!!!
