How common are false pregnancies? I just had one female who was going through one. I first noticed because she was biting her nipples so I took her to the vet because I was worried she would bite them off. He told me that she was having a false pregnancy and she was lactating. I now have another female that the vet thinks might be going through a false pregnancy. She kept me awake all last night nesting and whining and she's being really moody. My question is do I need to be worried about anything? Is there anything that I should watch out for? Can they go into labor? Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks.

Hi Mysti When breeding our Dobermanns phantom pregnancies was a common occurance. We found the best thing to do was carry on as normal - plus if lactating cut down on food give lots of water and up the excercise and do not let the female nest and have a toy to nurse. We found out the hard way when one of our females decided to " have her litter" on our bed and was nursing a pair of socks when I went in the room she stood up and started to stand over the "puppy" to protect it. Needless to say she was chased out and the "puppy' went into the washing machine!! But no babying the females they soon get back to normal.

I had one 6 months ago. Full breast, replete with milk(and lots of it). On expected day of delivery, she started nested and after 2 days I took her to the vet for x-rays to find out she had no puppies. She acted in EVERY way like she did when she had puppies earlier, with the exception of a temperature drop. I immediately decreased her coloric intake, and started a physical regiment and got her weight back down.

Good to see a dobermann Breeder on the Board, myself being a dobermann enthusiast!
Can you let me know which Dobes you have in your kennel ?

could be false pregenacy -- but perhaps not -- another consideration oif you mated your female -- a pregancy that was aborted/or pups fetuses that were resorbed which are also a common occurances--
