angus and i have recently been accepted into the READ program and had our first reading day in Upland, Ca last saturday. it was wonderful! READ stands for Reading Education Assistance Dog. Children who have reading problems (and there are many kids who don't, but LOVE to participate too) often don't want to read aloud in a classroom or at home. They may be ridiculed or they may just feel embarassed because they don't read well. BUT, they WILL read willingly to a dog! dogs do not judge them or make fun of them or get impatient. this program has been proven to help raise a childs literacy levels and to help them love to read. of course, their accomplishments then give them self-confidence. nothing but good stuff here!
i am so happy we are part of this. if anyone else participates, share!
a note: TDI, Inc. has their own program. we participate under their "flag", but the READ material is great & taking their test is okay.

How neat. I know kids who have reading problems.  What a great idea.

Thank you.

That's outstanding.  You guys are making a difference.  I saw something about  READ  on a TV news program  a while back, it looks like a wonderful program.

we get to do it again this saturday. the group i'm with has a number of people involved, but there was only one team scheduled so i jumped at the chance. it gives us more experience & i love seeing kids read! most of the other dogs in the group are labs or golden retrievers so it's nice to have a big sweet german shepherd in the mix. angus was a "hit" last saturday - he's so big and i sometimes worry that people will be scared, but he made alot of new friends. plus, upland is a really neat little community - very dog friendly. i just wished we lived there lol.
thanks for the nice words of encouragment - always appreciated!

very, very good......I have a friend that I believe has a
a very high IQ....but he can not read or write. He is about
67 now. He raised a family. Bought and ran a trucking
business with his wife, and own several nice pieces of
real estate.....He showed me how to start training my horse.
He was dyslexic in school and hated to go because of the teasing.
He taught himself very slowly but learned well everything he
knows....I would say he has an IQ of about 180.

Also thanks for saying something about it here,  this might encourage more people to get involved.

It is a wonderful program and incredibly beneficial. Most therapy dog organizations participate in a reading program and the results are amazing. We are certified through Share-A-Pet and there are multiple opportunities to to get involved. Presently we only go to nursing homes, but as soon as my schedule allows we will get involved in a reading program. Keep up the good and very significant work!
