I  have purchased a new German Shepherded from Germany last week, whom it seems that he was very spoiled by his ex owner, he looks very depressed to me i.e eating very little, hardly chases the ball which according to videos sent to me he was crazy about, etc...., the boy is 14 months old.

How long this will last for? Is their any recommendations for him to overcome this period of home sick?

Can anyone send me a chart depicting dogs age in comparison with human, i.e. a dog who is 1 year old this equal a human of how old etc...

Thanks for your advises / recommendations.

Make sure you don't put too much pressure on the little fella. He's had a long trip and is in the midst of a huge culture shock. I'm sure some dogs are full of it the moment they step into the airport parking lot - but remember, dogs are individuals and take things differently from one another. I would not be too worried about his disinterest,  but just to be safe you should make a trip to the vet. Lethargia and "depression" are often symptoms of underlying health problems. He is just a baby-baby and will need encouragement and a kind, gentle leader. Do not cater to his insecurities, but understand it is likely par for the course. I don't mean to anthropormorphize, but I would be pretty bummed out if I was randomly shipped across the world then had to live in a house full of exhuberent strangers!

Good luck with your new puppy! I'd love to see a picture if you feel comfortable with that....

Your Dog is in survival mood right now. He has been totaly up-rooted from his natve country, siblings, owners, different food etc. He is in a kind of shock.

Don't push him until he settles down. But exercise him and make sure he has fun. Feed him something special.

I got my dog from Germany when he was 2 yrs. old. On day 2 I took him for a ride and gave him some soft-serve ice cream. After the first taste he turned around and look at me like he was in heaven. Boy did that little deed break the ice.

So try something special with him. It takes time. Stay positive but let him settle in at his own pace.

Good Luck

You might want to try ignoring the dog, provide the pup with food, water, shelter and execise, thats it! Do not even speak to it. Do that for about 4 days and the dog will come around. He/she will be craving attention, sounds harsh but it's not. It works

Hi Tarekallam!!  I would not consider that normal behavior We take dogs in all the time that are much older even they adapt quickly and do not have problems eating or playing and adults we sell never have that complaint unless he has a super soft temperament ? , I would take his temp and possibly pull a basic blood profile ,depression is often something like a fever, giardia [if he  came from Germany] or even  erlichiosis. I would be very concerned if it he were one of mine. granted I am a bit of a worry wart I would get a clean bill of health before I attributed anything to ''depression'' the last one I got from Germany acted ''depressed'' once I got rid of his giardia he was perky as could be!!!!
