I have a question...I've heard a lot of people say that dogs should never be fed pork.  I was just wondering what the opinions are on that, and if it's unanimous not to feed pork, why?

I've never seen anyone explain why that is, and I'm curious about it.

Maybe because raw pork may contain trichinosis(sp?) cysts, which, once ingested, can hatch & then infest the animal that ate the raw, or cooked rare pork. Humans can be infected as well, which is why pork is never served rare. Hope that helps! jackie harris

Jackie, I knew that pork can be dangerous to humans if undercooked.  I don't personally eat pork, but my family does, and my hubby always complains that I overcook the pork chops.  I don't try to, but I want it well done, for that very reason.

I have been told by a number of people that pork should not be fed to dogs, period, cooked or otherwise, so I was wondering why that was, if there was a toxicity issue or something of that nature.

Never really thought much about the parasite issue in raw pork when feeding it to dogs..Of course I don't feed pork.  When I get trimmings from a butcher friend of mine to supplement my kibble feeding, I always make sure that he's only cutting beef or lamb.  Sometimes I get the trimmings plus fat, so I can render the extra fat to make soap...I don't like the pork fat for soap.  It makes a softer soap, and I don't care for the texture.

That is not near as common in commercially raised pork as it was years ago.  I don't worry too much about feeding pork anymore.  I don't feed it as often as other meats, though it is part of the raw grind mixture I get from the local meat market.

We feed raw pork about once a week. The adults get one half frozen pigs foot, the dogs love them and the pig's feet are awesome for cleaning teeth. If they don't get their costomary pig's foot, they'll get a meaty pork neck bone.

No problems here.

They tried to pass off to me rather uncooked Pork and Steaks a few times in the  Resturants in Spain this last couple of weeks.
The Chef's in Sevilla cannot cook to save there lives. The worst food i have ever had, i lost just over 3lb in weight due to my lack of eating at the WUSV, which in hind sight was not such a bad thing anyway.

Crys:

Some people do not eat pork for religious reasons only. Pork is one of the best WHITE meats you can eat.

For feeding raw to the dogs, IT DOES NOT HURT THEM at all...THe dog has a completely different digestion tract and system than we do.

Nothing to worry about.

Just make sure it is clean and fresh and handled as you would any raw meat giving the dogs...Anything can have germs or/and worms or parasites on, in or around them....Freeze any meat., thaw almost all the way and feed..Do not let dog bury it or if not eaten in 30 minutes feed smaller the next time to assure dog eats it completely.

Discard uneaten part in a recepticle the dog cannot sniff out or go find.

Pork should not be fed raw due to the risk of worms as the others mentioned and also due to the fact that it can be contaminated by salmonella.Last year a friend of mine who is a vet took a part in a study on frequency of prevalance of salmonella serotypes in slaughter pigs in European Union,he did the research in Slovakia and he got the results from other 24 countries taking part in the study.I read the study as he asked me to translate the results he was sent from Brussels for him, the frequency of prevalance of salmonella in tested carcass and lymph nodes varied from zero positive samples in Sweden to 34 percent of positive samples in Spain.
Steve - you were right to refuse undercooked pork in Spain!
We sometimes feed our dogs pork, always properly cooked but not too often as it can cause loose stool, pork has too much fat.

Trichinosis is a very, very rare bug in todays pork. I can find no reason that pork should not be included in the raw diet. The dog digestive system seems to be very resistant to salmonella, so that should not be a big concern either. I try to include some pork as a part of my dogs diet.

There is no sane reason to exclude pork.
