Hello everyone,
I am looking for some good, educated advice about my GSD puppy's PennHip Scores....Plans are to show him and eventually breed him.. He is just about 6 months old and here are the results::

LEFT: di - 0.42  djd-none   Cav.- No  Other - NA
RIGHT: di - 0.44   djd - none   Cav. - No   Other - NA

LAXITY PROFILE RANKINGS:  40th Percentiles

I have mostly used OFA and was wondering if someone could get me interpreting advice and where to go from here....[Breeding worthy, test again later, not get too worked up:)   ]

Thanks!!

DI is distraction index
DJD is degenerative joint disease
CAV is cavitation
OTHER is other findings noted

Your pup's laxity profile rating in the 40th percentile means approximately 60% of German Shepherds in the PennHip database have tighter hips or less hip joint laxity than your pup. At his age, I wouldn't get too worked up about it as laxity is normal in a lot of puppies.

For a more detailed explaination go to the PennHip website research.vet.upenn.edu/Default.aspx

I have seen dogs Pennhip at the same age, get the same scores then go ahead and OFA good at 2.

I had a rottweiler that received a pen hip score of 0.81 and 0.83 at six months of age. He went OFA excellent at 24 months.

The score is quite high for a GSD, you cn´t compare it with Rottweilers.
Take special care of your dog, don´t let him jump too much.

I would prefer to se a score in high twenties or middle thirties, but it is definitely a score that can turn out to have very functional or good hips.

Just count yourself lucky that your dog wasn't injured in the PennHip "procedure".  It can be extremely dangerous.  I know from sad experience.

Go with OFA or SVA, it is at least not dangerous to your dog.

Michelle       Could you be more specific-we have done close to 100 PennHip x-rays and have never had a dog injured or even act sore.  The vet that did your x-rays did something wrong.  We have had dogs within all ranges-from <100 percentile to >10 percentile and all ranges in between.

the problem is the percentile 40 percentile of what total database talk about subjective and fluid !  Its not anywhere near the number OFA has and thats only around 80k  the  painfully low numbers in that database and the fact very few if any individuals  have any depth pf pedigree with Pennhip ratings to validate their stats,They have yet to do any database studies that I know of probably in part to the low numbers they have and progeny that have both parents with ratings are few and far between. I consider OFAs 80k painfully low consider Labs have 100k more in their database,so I can only imagine how few individuals Pennhip has. I do not think Pennhip is a great tool for breeders. OFA has proven their phenotype studies are valid..Pennhip not so much..or at all
