I've just been doing some searches and it appears to me that the prices for high line puppies is rather high $2k and higher is that the norm? These puppies may or may not develop into anything other than a pet but your paying for potential? What is a reason price for a high line puppy?

who is the breeder....in some cases what you get after the sale is worth it. It also depends on what the pup is and what you are looking for.
There is a very very short list i would spend top dollar on a dog for....
Male or female matters where your looking too. Some just have better boys then girls and visa versa

In my experience.puppies change so much. How can you guarantee what a puppy is going to be?I sell all my puppies for a realistic price as pets,

It is supply and demand. When the puppy comes from a serious breeder and has a first rate pedigree you are safer. You are buying genetic pool and betting with higher probability of obtaining whatever you are looking for. However, higher probability does not mean certainty, a bet is a bet; nothing is guaranteed. You pay high prices only to have better odds, it is your risk and your choice.

I find that some of the most reputable breeders charge prices that tend to be in the middle between the extremes but you are also more likely to get what you pay for.
One breeder tends to charge $7500+ for what he calls his "best" pups - sire may be B+ tp A+ but the dams are all mediocre at best.
If you pay around $3000 for a nice impoprt pup (not including any shipping out to you from the importer's kennel, is pretty reasonable.
I say a pet store selling "imported" German WL pups (from Ohio) with no papers for $2400 - CRAZY!! But people bought them FAST! STUPID!
Sellers will sell dogs for what the market will bear, and a lot of people will pay exactly those prices because they believe they are getting a special dog!
The buyer must always beware. "If you buy before you look, you sometimes gets took!"

I understand your paying for potential but potential is only a belief system. I've had imports actually both of my last two dogs were imports one a first generation Larus von batu son and a first generation Quirn von hochmoor female both wonderful dogs but It was a roll of the dice. 7,500 for a puppy? $3,000 for a puppy. Puppies are like children what they are as infants has no bearing what they will be as adults.

Are u people nuts these prices are nuts. Got to Germany visit clubs get to know and make friends with dog people. You would not believe what the dog people in Europe charge each others for dogs . Its so reasonable.....not where near not even on the same planet with the prices you mention on here. When buying a puppy remember they are really no different than buying produce they can go bad quick and its always a gamble. Just because someone asks a stupid price doesn't mean its a quality pup. Price does not = a good dog . Homework and asking tons of questions and test , test , test the parents will = a maybe decent dog

I would never pay 3,000 for a puppy, I'd use the cash and cruise some pounds till I find the perfect dog.

I can see someone paying such prices for a dog that is going to be a serious competitor. However, the majority of those dogs are purchased by what I like to call "status buyers", since they shine by their absence in the ring. These are the same people who'd buy an exotic sports car just because of the name plate, and are not able to drive it safely or competently. Truly, some of the world's best dogs are sitting on their master's couch.
If you do your homework, you can find a suitably bred dog, bred by a person who is not out to wring the last possible penny of profit from his/her investment... Those will be reasoably priced and the breeder is more likely to be more concerned about where their pups are going and how they will lead their lives and/or extend their lineage than charging yoou a price that can only be justified by ego.

For $7500, you can get an already titled, breed surveyed, h/e certified dog from Germany. That is a sucker price for a pup.
I would expect to pay 1500 to 2000 here in the U.S (for a pup). and that would be for a pup that has the potential to actually show and do well. If you want only a companion from s/l, you can find very good for 1500. The choice of a breeder is much more important than a couple of hundred either way.
Best,
Rick
