This is such a moving photograph--even more so when you view the larger version on the Willow Street website.

I came across this picture a few months ago on the the Friends of the Reading Police K-9 Unit website and immediately shared it with my trainining partners.  Let us not forget how many officers pay the ultimate sacrifice with their lives--and as this photo shows all too well, the sadness that is left behind.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Melanie.

Absolutely...thanks for commenting.  The really neat part was that this shot was candid.  The handler downed him next to the marker while they were setting up.  Rocky put his nose down on the picture on his own and they hurried to get the cameras on him and snapping.  Nothing was put on the officers picture to get his nose on it...it just happened while they were setting up.

Wow,  when Jim described the photo shoot to me I knew it had to be awesome, but even I could not imagine how moving it would turn out to be.  Just a beautiful tribute.

This is a very moving portrait. Made me pause to wonder what Scott was like and how can we possibly ever thank him and others who pay the ultimate price to keep us safe.

I also wonder why there isn't a bigger response to this thread but then I am as guilty as anyone of not responding because I don't know what.to say.

I think Rocky said it best.

Well said Triodegirl.  Thanks to the others for commenting...I'm sure the Friends of the Reading Police K9 would appreciate if people could FW the K9 Rocky portrait link to friends and family and/or share it on your facebook/twitter pages.

Officer Scott Wertz was shot and killed at approximately 2:00 am after he and his partner responded to a fight at a local convenience store at the intersection of 8th and Walnut Streets.

Officer Wertz and his partner were working a plainclothes regional auto theft detail when the call was broadcast and they responded to the scene. When they arrived at the location, they heard several shots in the parking lot and saw a man leaving the lot.

As the officers approached the man he began to flee on foot. When Officer Wertz caught the man, he suddenly fired two shots, fatally striking Officer Wertz in the chest. Officer Wertz's partner immediately tackled the suspect and took him into custody.

The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.

Officer Wertz had served with the Reading Police Department for 9 years. He had previously worked as a prison guard and as a part time officer for the Sinking Spring and South Heidelberg Township Police Departments. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Re-establishment of the City's K9 unit was one of the ways the community felt would increase officer safety

Melanie,
That's an awesome photo.  My thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Wertz's family and the Officers in his Dept.  What a tragedy.  I've met his wife and she is friends with friends of mine.  I know from personal experience of having a friend and partner killed, standing next to me, what they are going through.  You never really get over it; but as time goes on you have longer and longer moments of not thinking about it.  Over time you are able to think about other things and less of the day is spent thinking about the loss of a loved one or friend.

The photo is a nice way to remember Officer Wertz and the ultimate sacrifice he made.

Jim
