Received the OFA report that my 2.5 year old shepherd Robby ("Bleap von "Bleaphaus") has moderate hip dysplasia.

Breeder says I should get another vet to retake the x-rays because of poor positioning, and send them to the SV.

Before I embark on another expensive endeavour just to get a passing hip score,  I want to see what others with more experience have to say.

Question 1:
What is your oppinion of the positioning?

I firmly believe environment had very little role in his hips.  He was fed a low protein diet and grew very slow (I have documentation of it both in pictures and in weights).  He has not been jumped or worked hard. And I didn't take him jogging with me until he was 18 months (and jogging him only occured a few times for 3-5 miles).

If I can't get a passing hip score...

Question 2:

I am contemplating finding him a pet home after I get his SchH 1 with full disclosure over the status of his hips.  Do people normally ask for compensation for training, etc when rehoming a dog like this.

They could be a little straighter, and the knees could be turned a bit more...but I've certainly seen worse positioning.

Is the left hip on our right side? Doesn't look great, for sure. Other side looks ok. What, specifically, did OFA say?

Exactly as I thought. His right hip is just fine.

Lol thats kind of embarrasing actually.  Hubby put the ad up trying to prove we could make lots of money from studing Robby out.  And guess what... no one contacted us!  I should probably have him take that down.

I don't think that positioning is going to change the results.  SV might grade them differently, but either way that left hip doesn't look very good.

Well my suggestion would be to look at your contract. If you have fallowed all the rules and regulations, you should be compensated by the breeder. Of course all of this depends on what is written in stone. Your contract may state that the hips be certified by a certain age, or by SV , or OFA may be sufficient. IF the contract does not state a specific board to use, and you have already sent his to OFA, and now want to be reimbursed for a defective dog.... Do not bother to certify with SV. If it is your breeders request, and he/she wants to see it.... It is their expense. You have done what you are supposed to do. You obviously purchased him to title and breed, you should get what you pay for.
Good luck, and have a great day!

Renee,

Unfortunately, when I bought Robby from Jean "Bleap", I was unable to follow one of the"rules".  It required the dog to be OFA pre-limmed between 12 and 13 months WITHOUT sedation.  I called every vet in the area I was living in (even Cornell vet hospital) and none would even attempt to do his hips without sedation.  Club members where I trained also didn't know of any vets.  So my contract was void.  I decided that since my contract would be void if I got the prelim with sedation, I would wait until he old enough to be certified.  I've learned my lesson.

Edited: Added "Bleap".
