Do you guys leave your fursaver on all the time?  And does anyone use the fursaver with a toggles to make it easier to remove or just the one that slides over the head?

I don't leave collars on my dog, only a cheap break away thing I call a necklace for holding his tag.  I use the traditional brass Herm Sprenger fursaver that slips on over the head when I am training/working my dog.

I would never leave a fursaver on my dog...too easy to get caught on something, the dog panics, then chokes itself.  I use the kind that slips over the head.

Never have them on the dog unless there out of the kennel or the house. slip on.

There was a heartbreaking thread by someone on this board a few years ago. She came home from work to find her favorite dog hung to death on something in his kennel....the saddest post I think I have ever read. No, don't leave them on all the time. jackie harris

Might have been my post... a friend came home to find one dog with jaw caught in other's chain with broken jaw, and the dog with collar dead... It was 20 years ago, but still gives me willies... Someone else who bought a pup from me got frustrated with her jumping her 6' kennel fence, so put her on a 5'chain inside the kennel thinking that it would stop her from reaching the top... but the collar ....  well they came home from a night at the movies to find her dead on the fence.  Just two of a zillion simular stories I'm sure others could tell, and why no collars unless I'm with them, yes it takes more time to put collars on 5-6 dogs when we're going out for a run... but better that than the consequences

This is as good a place as any to relay this:

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE FUR SAVERS OR PINCH COLLARS ON YOUR DOGS IN THEIR CRATES EITHER!!!

This year at Dog Stock there was a GSD in his crate (typical plastic airline crate) with his pinch on, the dog somehow got one of the teeth of the pinch collar stuck through one of the small windows with wire bars on the side of the crate, then in trying to get unstuck, he twisted it further, panicked and really got himself knotted up bad.  Luckily some of us heard the horrible racket the dog was making.  Wire cutters had to be used to get the dog free, and it wasn't a case of just busting one of the wires.  That dog might have completely strangled himself had people not heard what was happening.  His owner came right away, you can imagine how she was feeling, but nobody was willing to reach their hand in that crate (wisely considering the circumstances).  When he was finally cut free, his owner got him out of the crate right away, and  he recovered very quickly, but this story easily could have had a horribly tragic ending.

Sue, I'd even go one step further: Do not leave ANY kind of collar on a dog when it's crated and/or will not be under someone's direct observation for more than a few minutes..any kind of collar can get caught on something, either in the crate or just around the house and yard, and result in tragic consequences.

I guess we should start a new post about the things we've learned NOT to do for our dogs...
Like:
No collars of any type left on our dogs when not being observed...

How to House-Proof our homes...

What toys are alright for them and which ones are not good for them...

Good idea,  Q man!!!   By the way, Bob where the hell you been?  It's good to see you back here, don't be such a stranger, you are one of the very valuable and experienced regular posters we have been missing around here for way too long!
