Scarlet Akai

by Scarlet Akai on 12 October 2010 - 22:10

Does anyone have any experience with Groenendaels? (Beligian Sheepdogs)  I'm just a bit curious about the breed are they just like Mali's temperament wise?

In general do they show good work ethic..

Do you think one could make a good SAR dog,

and how do they respond to okayed strangers.  aggressive or just aloof...

I like the looks of the breed and what is said about them on paper but I haven't really met any.

Nervy for the biting sports but compete well in agility and AKC obedience.  Would be fine for SAR provided there were no sensitivities to sounds or surfaces.  I do know a breeder in Germany who does very well with his dogs in shows and is a very nice gentleman.

Thanks for the response does your German breeder friend have a website? Or do you know if his dogs are posted here?

hi scarlet , when ringsport started in belgium , about 100 years ago , it was dominated by groenendaels , and there were but few good malinois , nowadays you wont find any good ones for SChh or policework ,

Im guiding someone at my club with a groenendael , training for IPO ,  he is supposed to be one of the better males in europe workingwise , he is a fun dog to work with , happy temperament , nice drives and grips , nice ob,  but very sensitive to sudden noises and sudden movements
this one will pass his workingtest , but only because it is the same program  everytime , on the same field all the time

I think it will be difficult to find one that will be stable enough for SAR , as that will be done on different locations and under different situations all the time , unless ofcoarse you only want to work on club level

We have a couple in our French Ring club that were bred by Salte Cabre in Europe.  I think the kennel is in France, a search on the Web would find it . They are one of the more successful kennels when it comes to producing Groenendaels that can still work (French Ring, Mondio Ring, IPO, etc).   Mainly, IMO, because they incorporate a lot of Malinois lines through the Tervuren offspring that pop up in Malinois litters.

Where are you located?  Good luck in your search.

malindobe , tervueren is not the same as groenendael , and your correct , some breeders breed longcoat malinois into the tervueren to improve working qualities

**tervueren is not the same as groenendael **

I am well aware of this.  However, a Groenendael x Malinois breeding is not going to be approved by most of the European registeries. I'm not sure if any would approve it since it could produce short coated solid black dogs.  A Groenedael x Tervuren breeding will be approved by some of them, that allow inter-variety breeding.  Therefore, the working Groendael breeders are accessing Malinois lines through the Tervuren.  Unless they are going directly to Malinois, and falsifying the paperwork.

Duke, I would not question malndobe's knowledge of the history and bloodlines of the Malinois.  Few people here in the states have her knowledge of the breed.
