Could I get opinions on breeding a 7 year old bitch? She is in good shape physically, OFA certified, and is a proven whelper. She has had 2 litters and is a great Mom. Have any of you ever bred a GSD of this age? I see several classifieds where they are selling 6 year old bitches for breeding purposes, but I'm not sure if this is a good thing.

I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

Does the dog have any working titles? Schutzhund,Police k9 cert,SAR, Disabled service assistance?  What does she bring to improve the breed?  If the answer is no.  Please don't breed your dog.  The german shepherd is a WORKING DOG. There are plenty of pet dogs at the shelter.

Personally, I do not like seeing dogs bred past the age of 6. This would mean, she should be retired when she turns 7 (at the oldest). This is just MY opinion and you know the saying ... everyone has an opinion.

I know of a breeder who bred her 9 year old bitch. Yikes. Not my cup of tea, but to each their own.

Just seems like at some point the old girls need a break, eh?

Love my canine- I'm asking people's opinions on breeding a 7 year old bitch, not your opinion on if I can or cannot breed my dog, nor am I asking what you think her qualifications should be  This is why I "lurk" here and have never posted- some of you people act so high and mighty. I simply want to know if any breeders have bred a 6 or 7 year old bitch and what their thoughts or experiences are.

So the answer in no.

In answer to your 2nd post:

The oldest I bred was a 6 year old. She had 2 litters for me. One at age 5 and one at age 6. The last litter was smaller and harder for her to deliver. She had just turned 6 when she had that litter. I never bred her again.

Ramage: Thank you for your response. I am in agreement with you. I don't feel good about seeing "breeding" bitches advertised for sale at ages 6-7. I have always owned German Shepherds (all neutered & spayed) but never bred them so I wanted to ask. Thanks again!

Often times older females will need to have a c-section to deliver their pups.  I've seen a few breeders do this and make it the female's last litter and have her spayed at the same time.  It can be done, but techincally if you ask your veterinarian a 7 year old dog is considered a senior citizen.

I bred my bitch at 8, was her last litter, she had no problems whelping the litter without C-section. i know of plenty of workingline breeders in germany that have bred 6-9 yr old females there, didn't hear of there being any problems there either.Sid vom Haus Pixner's mom mary whelped a litter at 9 + yrs old. IT's all in what YOU feel comfortable with. generally though it's going to be a smaller litter.
