Just goes to show you never know who you are dealing with and what their intentions are.  The dog did exactly as trained and may have helped to save that Officer's life.  I'm sure the bite the suspect got from the dog was worse than the bite he gave the dog.  When the guy comes off his drug induced high he'll begin to feel the affects of his actions.  Good job by the dog and Officer.

I hope the POS gets some serious jail time.

Sounds to me like I'd get a different K9

Why, the dog came out of the vehicle and engaged the guy in the leg.  What more do you want?  What could the dog have done differently?  Especially against a dope up nut job who probably didn't feel the pain.

Phil, gottah second Jim's question, what else would you have the K9 do?  He responded to the threat to his handler, he put a grip on the suspect and did not come off despite being 'attacked' in return.

Isn't that his job?

Maybe Phil meant that the guy can be a good K-9

If you read the story correctly, the "perp" had to be pulled off of the dog, not the other way around so apparently the dog did let go.  Don't you think that in order for this guy to bend down and get his choppers on the dog's side that the animal had already let go?  Think about it, dog bites guy's leg, guy now bends down to get to dog's flank and bite him?  You would think that the dog would let go and grab the guy's face.  Sounds to me like the guy had the upper hand,,,,,,,,,to me???,,,,,,,I want a better dog, but you do what you want.  Officer gets punched, dog gets bit, I'd say the score here was asswipe 1, handler and dog 0.

I dont think the dog was trained to handle a guy bitting back. You know what the say "take a bit out of crime" this time crime took a bite back. I dont think the dog did anything wrong. Probably had to leg go to try to get a better bite. No matter how well trained a natural reaction is bound to occur.

Phil,
I can't really say what I think on a public forum.  However, asswipe went to jail, cop and dog went home.  Cop 1, asswipe 0 to use your scoring system.  I also can't  won't say what I would do in the same situation, but I say the guy looks a little too happy in his mugshot.     When was the last time you were involved in a real fight with a cracked out, methed out or a guy high on PCP.  I've been in a few before I was assigned to K9 and a few since then.  I've been in one on one fights with armed subjects going for a gun.  One thing I've learned is that my dog is another tool and I don't count on him to fight my fights.  Fortunately for me my dog has helped out on 3 different situations when I was hands on with a subject.  He did exactly as I wanted. Even after being kicked in the face on one occasion.

I heard someone once say "give me a kong and swiss army knife and I can kill most dogs."  Everyone thinks that statement is BS or not effective on their dogs, but it is true for a vast majority of dogs.

I wasn't there and don't like to Monday morning QB other cops, especially on this forum of all places.  I do not know the dog or handler, but if the dog engaged and gave the cop the upper hand that is a big plus in my book.  Maybe it's not the toughest ass eater out there, but he certainly engaged and he and his handler went home safely except for a couple of cuts and bruises.  All things considered not a bad day for the cop, certainly could have been a whole lot worse.

One thing is clear the dog outed the POS didn't.

Jim
