Rat poison in dogs - having just lost a little working terrier to rat poison I was searching the web for explanations and saw the sad tale about the ladies young dog prompting me to write this.

My dog fell ill approx 4 weeks ago with a temperature and pale gums signifying anaemia - however as Kennel cough had been in the area it was put down to this and he seemed fine within a few days just a little quieter than normal but his anaemia had gone.  2 weeks later another dog who he was often with died so we visited the vet and telling them this I asked them to test for rat poison as they would go off into the farm ratting together.  The vet took bloods and 2 days later said they were normal so when I asked "does that mean he has not had poison" she said yes definitely not poison. 3 Days later the dog collapsed I rushed him to the vets where he died on the operating table from internal haemorage - due the vet said to toxin of some description.
I have since spoken to all the rat poison manufacturers whose products were around the local area and they all say the vet should have tested for clotting of the blood as this is the only real indicator as not all dogs react the same to the poisons and can still show normal results when tested.
This was a very fit dog he showed none of the signs usually associated with poisons ie - vomit, diahrea, bleeding gums, blood in urine or faeces. PLEASE BEWARE POISON DOES NOT ALWAYS SHOW IN THE WAY YOU THINK IT WILL.
I know this was a difficult case as we did not know for sure he had consumed poison - the poison he had taken contained BRODIFACOUM lethal in the most tiny quantities - 1 small rat block can and will kill a dog. BEWARE

Yes we had one of our dogs probably ingest some Brodifacoum(I say probably because I don't know for sure, but she had bitten through one of the metal rat traps we had and we could not find the rat block anywhere so we assumed she had eaten it. We discovered it the next day and immediately started her on Vitamin K for 3 weeks at high levels. She was fine and did not exhibit any symptoms. So if you suspect this possibility start the dog on Vit K asap as an antidote to the rat poison.
