This is Banjo, my GSD, a pure breed with black spots on his tounge. I have had a few comments about Chow's in regard to him. I'm always offended, but explain that it's common in Pure GSDs. BTW: A story, Banjo was born in Phnom Penh Cambodia where I lived for 7 years. The local Khmers say that a dog with black on the tounge was bitten in a past life by a snake and if bitten in this life will always survive! Good thing since we returned to the states and now live in Rattle Snake country!!!

Yeah, Banjo was weiged today at the vet, he is 78.8lbs. He will be 2 years old this October 30th. The vet was thrilled with his lean, mean, athletic weight!
Also, how do you get a picture by your name on this site?

Hollis, look on the left side of the screen. It will have in a red box options for registered users. Look down the options below that, you will find edit profile. Click that and you will see an option to change the picture. It should say something like user logo. I'll post a picture of my boy, it's an old one though. His chest has gotten deeper than it was in the picture, lower, and I expect it to get even lower in the upcoming months and for him to start to widen out even more. Not to mention he's a lot darker now than he was in the picture. I'm going to try to get a few pictures taken during protection or just random shots of him soon since it's been a while.

A man who was a Cadavier dog owner from 9-11 butted in and told the man and lady I was delivering the young pup to , that they just bought a half chow pup....A vet in Dallas told this Cadavier dog man this, he claimed...I also had the wife call me later , and told me her vet told her the same thing...I came unglued.
To make things worse, her husband came home from work a week later and said those at work told him the same story,,,he bought a dog with chow in it. Needless to say , my blood pressure , went higher than the Pine trees on my property and it was Mothers Day sunday also. I just called Jane Steffanhagen, , and she even talked to these people by phone from Wisconsin and the wife was still not believing us that it was a myth..
Needless to say, I am sure when Jane Stephenhagen told me out of 3,000 of her dogs, 1,800 of them had black spots on their tongues., she knew of what she was speaking.
It is the dominant black/red gene dogs usually who show this...Dark pigmented dogs out of lineage of mainly blk/rd parentage..

Pigment has noting to do with this. Black tongue spots are a form of birthmark, they're common to many breeds. Shave your dog and you will see more all over his body. It's perfectly normal.

Now, my mutt, he has a solid PURPLE tongue/mouth. He is a pound mutt and we know nothing about the father, could be part Chow or other Asian breed with the black mouth. I don't really care and it's always comical to me how obsessed people are with trying to figure out what mix my dog is.
