I have heard from people that train in both PSA & Schutzhund
that PSA  envolves more of a real life situation while protecting one self than the art of Schutzhund,
anyone care to explain the differences to me, I would like to begin training in protection, but I am unsure of which direction to go.

I know it takes awhile to complete training for certain titles, and I don't want to waste my time and energy by going in the wrong direction.

  Your opinions please,

   Thanks!

I wish they had a PSA club near here, I would have gone to it.  We have Schutzhund clubs around here, but I honestly don't care for it,  I either didn't like the clubs I went to and how they handled the dogs, or the others that were somewhat within driving distance were just too full, so we do personal protection and a lot of real life scenarios with my friend who is a police dog trainer.

I am a fan of both Sch and PSA, I do helper work and decoy work for both sports.
I would have to say good Sch foundation training is the best way to start out with a dog.
It is very easy to cross train for both sports, but I think you will get better results starting with Sch.

I enjoy both, I like SchH because alot of attention is spent on precision and OB and protection.  I like the pressure and scenario based competition of PSA.

It depends on what YOU want...Schutzhund is like Boxing, skilled but routine and governed by many "rules".  PSA I'd say is more like MMA, alot less "rules" more pressure, and closer to being a real fight.

You will find different sports appeal to different people.  One isn't necessarily better than the other, they all have pros and cons.  One thing I have noticed is usually the people who have actively competed in more than one grip sport tend to have respect for participants of any of the grip sports.  It's the kind of thing you need to see for yourself and make up your own mind about.  I suggest you go to local clubs to get a feel for the various sports offered in your area.

Phil are you offering to decoy??  My PSA guy would love for you to visit.

Here's a "philly wrap" that I didn't wrap too good...does that count? LOL

No because I know that ANY bite material that is worn by a helper/decoy is detectable by a dog.  There is no such training that can simulate "real life" but real life.
