Clear discharge during pregnancy - Page 1

Hi All,

 My female is about 46 days into her pregnancy, counting from her last breeding. This is her first litter and from all outward signs she is not "showing". The only change in her is a clear discharge, like KY jelly consistancy. I have been reading and it says it is a reliable sign of pregnancy but I am wondering if any of you have heard or had experience with it. The other litter I whelped a few years ago I dont recall seeing that in the mom. I have not ultrasounded or xrayed as I dont feel I need to unless there is a problem but I thought she should be showing me something by now!

Clear discharge is normal and usual, however attention is needed should the discharge have blood (dark) and/or bad odur.

Of course in the case of blood, it should not be in large amounts (regardless of depth of colour) either.

By day 46 you should be able to detect swelling in the mammary glands. The nipples should be hard and more pink in color,also her vulva should be bigger than it wan before she went into heat. Some German Shepherds do carry high and do not drop until day 57 also she may be having a small litter. The clear discharge is normal. please keep us updated .

Thanks for the responses. I would have thought she would be developing by now as well. I see some fullness in her ribs and she is a bit hard in her belly but not very big, I figured a small litter as well if she is pregnant. She is also being very picky with her food, driving me crazy! I will keep you all updated, she is due Oct 10th..

 To the OP- if it's her first litter, you may not see these signs so obviously. My import bitch was like this; she's a very substantial girl, wide in the body, and she didn't "look" pregnant until about ten days before she had the pups. She carried them pretty high, and her belly was hard, like you say. She had 9, and they were a good size. She had a litter of 3 after that, and NEVER looked pregnant.  The discharge occurred with the first pregnancy, but I don't remember it w/the second. 

As a side note, only lighter pigmented bitches will have pink nipples. That's a terrible indicator to use, as bitches with really good, dark pigment will have grayish blackish nipples, so don't go on that.  My bitch also acts totally normal in every way, so that's not reliable, either.

So sorry i must be very careful how I word things when I post here is what I should have said One of the most certain dog pregnancy symptom is to check you dog’s nipples. During the pregnancy the dog’s nipples swell and become enlarged and their color becomes darker.

Thanks, I sure am hoping..I am seeing no signs other than her discharge. She is a red sable and her nipples are normal in color and size. She is a thick girl as you were saying Jenni so there is a possibility she has a couple up under her ribcage, I tried to feel her belly before dinner and she is soft so the hardness could have been stool. I dont know, I guess time will tell. The next 2 weeks will be torture!
