I am looking for opinions on this training center.....

http://www.nk9.com/

I don't know that they would be my first choice in a training facility and I am considering other options, but they are about 2 hrs from my home and would be more practical in terms of travel....Does anyone have any experience with this training center or their trainers??

Main question.....They mentioned some clients leave their dogs at the facility for one-on-one private training for 5 to 10 days.......For those of you who are familiar with my situation, would you think that leaving Prince would be a good option? Has anyone ever sent their dog away for training ? If so,  what was your experience like?

                                                          Thanks, Deanna

I am thinking you should go alone and see what you can learn. Before you ruin whats probably not a bad dog.

I personally would not send my dog to someone else for training because i want my dog to convert to me and my style of training, I also have a heavy hand and straight to the point discipline which some people may not agree with however are always impressed with results...in your case from previous posts and from my limited understanding of your character I would actually think that Prince will benefit from someone else's training and having him submit to a new person and learn commands, discipline, develop an understanding of what is expected of him through a different approach...it may actually work for you and Prince...it's like having someone else's child in your home and having them eat a plate full of vegetables while their mother says "oh, she does not eat onions, or mushrooms and broccoli makes her gag" and here you are feeding the child chicken with broccoli sauteed with onions and mushrooms with sauce....hope that makes sense....
Unfortunately, I can't offer advice since i never send my dog away to class but if trainer checks out, and results are guaranteed and the place is up to your expectation...it may be the best decision you ever make...

I have worked in many boarding/ training centers over the past 30 yrs and I will not mention their names but I would not send my dog out to be trained. I know there are many reputable people and places but from my experience working at several, the better ones would take the dog out maybe 2-3 times a week and work the dog a bit. Otherwise they sit in a kennel run.  I have worked at others that the dog rotted in the kennel run then was taken out days before the owners would come, and they would use and ecollar to train the dog. A crash course.

Ive worked at several boarding kennels and not 1 of them would I ever leave my dog there. What they say and what is done are 2 different things.

Not saying they are all that way but I have yet to see 1 that really does what they claim to do.

Best to find a good trainer or group and work/train the dog yourself.

Ruger, I Agree with MOONS, I think it would be best for you and more importantly Prince for you to find a trainer that can teach both you and Prince. Based upon the posts you have made, you need it as much or maybe even more than he does. I personally would never send any of my dogs to ANYBODY unless I have known and watched them train over a period of time. People can do or say anything and put on a front, however if you have watched them, talked to them, looked in their eyes you're less likely to make a mistake.
Just my 2 cents

Ruger1, I must ask, is this for your dog or yourself? Is this the only reason you have the dog? I'm feeling sorry for the dog at this point. Moons.

For some people and situations it will work.
Others not so much.
When it is a case where the animal does not have a clear idea of what to do, then taking them and leaving them for training (always provided it does get worked as promised and the trainer is good) can at least set the foundation for the owner to have a better chance of success. However, that is totally null and void if the handler is not at the same time receiving training or instructions separately. And of course with continuous follow ups that will then combine dog and handler.
Two hours away in my mind is too far to achieve that successfully.
I am tempted to say that maybe in your case it may not be a totally bad idea if you can find someone that is close to you, trustworthy and as willing to work with you as the dog.

I have discovered that I am the largest problem  when it comes to training and my girl! Unless you are just going to watch from the sidelines and hire someone to handle your dog  in all aspects of  trials and training or shows ;then perhaps sending your dog away for training would be ok? If you desire to train and or learn how to train and handle your dog yourself: sending your dog away to  get trained is imo shooting yourself in the foot! My first obstacle in HOT(handler owner trained)  was learning myself what to do and how to do it! I have made trillions of mistakes! But we did it together and that in and of itself has created a bond between me and my girl! Unfortunately trial and error is part of training and training is not an easy task especially for the newbie or novice! I agree that you should find a trainer whom you have researched and watched many sessions and let them teach you and your dog!  For us it will be a long three years when we get out bh and then a one but a road well worth walking! and I trust your dog  is well worth the effort!

Deanna, Please do not send Prince away to a trainer, at least not yet. FIRST, you need to decide what goals you want to achieve, that are reasonable for him. For this, you need to work with a trainer personally. One who can honestly and correctly assess Prince's chsracter, temperment and drives. You have been so eager to do something with Prince, which is GREAT, but you really need to pick a lane, so to speak. You have jumped all over the the place as far as training is concerned, and you need to chose something, one thing, one venue, to start, and stick with it for a while. Going back and forth is only confusing the dog more. If you are interested in a very valuable and honest assessment, PM me. We have a training group in MD, we would welcome you, our trainer has over 30yrs of experience in dog training, and does private lessons with owners, as well as training the dog for several weeks after assessing and speaking to the owner. Raymond, trialing and shows aren't the issue here.  She's looking to get control of her dog before he tears someone up.  They've been through too many trainers already and they need to get the situation rectified immediately.
