According to court records, on July 18, 2000, Gregory and Janice Bartlett each pleaded guilty to one of eight counts of violating Penal Code Section 597t, mistreatment of a confined animal, a misdemeanor. 30 counts of cruelty to an animal were dismissed as part of the plea agreement. On October 19, 2000, they were each sentenced to one day in jail, and a $200.00 restitution fine. Both were placed on 3 years' formal probation and prohibited from owning animals during that period. I am usually a very trusting person!  And will believe someone upon  their word alone !I do not tend to  disbelieve what others say untill  I have been fooled several times by the persons in question! If the above is about ddr and company I also realize that people do make mistakes and  the justice system is set up to punish those who make them! But  abusing 64 animals threough neglect or for what ever reason is not just a mistake!Yes it or they are a cancerous growth that needs to be excised!

Raymond,
Yes, that is DDR-DSH.  Her name is Janice Bartmess.  Here is the link:  http://www.pet-abuse.com/cases/8106/CA/US/

This is the case we have been talking about.  Just google her name or do a search on the PDB.

I read your post Jim about considering the source of information one reads! The post was why why why! I followed your link as well as goggled her name and ddr-dsh!I do understand that it was over 10 years ago and they have paid the penalty of their  offense! I must however forgive them but I am not obligated to ever again  believe what they say! I am also not obligated to recommend any one to  use their services! Not that I am on a crusade to try and ruin any future business they may entertain but if it is a dog related business they should be barred from it ! No one pleads quilty in a plea bargaining agreement over mistreatment and abuse of more than 40 dogs! One dog dying from that abuse! A mistake is a mistake but what they did was intentional!

by hodie My experience with her is this: About 10 years ago, before I got heavily involved in SchH, I was reading a lot of listserves. Janice posted on one of them that she was placing dogs and her pleas became more and more desperate. So since I was doing GSD rescue, I emailed her eventually. She wanted me to come to CA to take several dogs or they would be put down. One was a young show line female that I later found out Johannes Grewe had bred and through another cronie of his, had traded to Bartmess. In any case, I did not hop at this because I was in another state. She started emailing me several times a day, some posts I simply did not get because she was lost in space, and eventually, I decided what the heck. I would make a trip to CA and get these dogs and bring them into my rescue. So I drove out there. When I arrived, I arrived at a house, a very tiny house, in a beat up area of Gardena. It was obvious that there were dogs in the back because of the incredible amount of barking. I could not see into the back yard because of a huge solid fence. The door was opened by a Hispanic woman who could not speak English, and as I was walking back to my car, a vehicle drove up with Janice in it. She then went into the back, would not allow me to go with her, and brought out one female, the show line female. I was absolutely stunned by the condition of the dog. She was emaciated and I mean emaciated and clearly had not been fed properly for months. The poor dog was caked in feces, dried, and smelled so badly I knew I could not put this dog in my vehicle. Her eyes were zombie like....no expression. The dog was essentially dead in her soul. I also noted she has terrible ear infections and urine scalds all over her belly. Janice said nothing about it, not even to make any excuse, as if she did not even see this condition. I was so shocked I did not know what to do. I could not believe someone who was telling everyone on the listserve how she loved her dogs could bring a dog out in this condition. She did say she had placed the others, which seemingly was not true. To make a long story short, I got a hose and rinsed the dog off for about an hour, dried her with my own towel as best I could, decided I had to take this dog, and left. I went about a mile down the road and stopped at a car wash and washed the dog for more than 30 minutes using my shampoo. I had trouble keeping her from drinking the water. I also fed her as I had brought along Donni and Thor, and the poor dog was so ravenous I was afraid she would choke. It cost me almost $1,000 to clear the ear infections, and months and months to bring this dog back to health. It was only later that I learned Janice had been arrested for abuse and neglect of the dogs. I actually requested and got court records long ago and read them, but probably don't still have a copy. It was pathetic and the conditions described matched what condition the dog was in that I took from her. In the meantime, I had driven to NM, where Johannes was judging a trial at Oliver's place, and I took the dog with me to show him how bad a shape she was in. He looked at her and said little except that he was glad I had the dog. He too knew of Janice Bartmess however, as I could see this in his face. So, when I saw this shit going on the PDB, I went back and found the case and posted my posts. I am so distressed that she is apparently back at it, and that some people cannot see though all of this. That, plus the general crap of people posting wanting to know what others think of their breeding dogs without health checks, the continual shit with certain people.

You cannot change what you don't acknowledge.  To this day Janice Bartmess (DDR) blames everyone else for the disgusting conditions of her dogs and her kennel.  She refuses to accept any responsibility.  For this reason I believe there is a good chance any dog in her care will quite likely  end up in the same condition and living in as bad a  hell hole as those dogs did 10 years ago.   If she were capable of seeing and admitting what she did was wrong, then she might be able to figure out how not to repeat  the same mistakes, but she thinks she did nothing wrong, and that's what's so frightening to me.

Well, some people deserve some special awards for creative writing, that's for sure! The post by Schaferhumpin' is full of outright lies and rubbish. I mean, I cannot  even fathom what the hell they are talking about, no resemblance to the truth, at all. But, that's the problem with the system, now. Too many lies. And, it goes unpunished. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals just made a decision in favor of a man who was pretending to be a highly decorated military veteran. They said in their decision that it was his "right to free speech" to lie. So, there you have it, folks. You cannot believe what you hear, as there is NO obligation to tell the truth, and no consequences for not doing so, even under oath. That being the case, how can any court of law be more than a gambling casino?
Since the lies are now becoming even more wild and colorful than ever before, there is obviously no point in even responding to any of them, point by point, but I will address a few..
Stated on record: "No food, no water"
Fact: uninterrupted water service for several years, 340 lbs of dog food purchased @ 36 hours before.
I never had anything to do with Johannes Grewe, and in fact, I have never had any particular interest in the man. I talked to a man years ago named Frank Posner, in Coquitlam, B.C Canada who said he had dealings with Johannes, and that obviously made a lasting impression on me, since I bring the names so easily to mind, so many years later.
There WAS a woman who picked up a very nice bitch and an older pup, early on, when I was dispersing my dogs (per agreement with the court), and to me, she was an eyesore, wearing an incredibly thin, flimsy dress which revealed a virtual orchard of unsightly cellulite and presented a very expansive view when she bent over to get something from her car. She brought a young black male GSD with her, and I was highly suspicious that she only wanted the older bitch to breed to her very feminine looking and diminutive male (who she naturally thought was wonderful).  My intuitions were apparently pretty good. She allegedly had a litter, then wanted to dump the bitch. I happened to know a good guy in NM who had wanted her after he found out she was available, but she was already gone. When I found out about this, I gave him the contact info and he picked her up. She died of old age on his property, years later. The other bitch pup got dumped pretty quick, too.
People are just too much. You cannot figure them. Try to do something nice and get kicked in the teeth.

DDR dummy, Hodie wrote that. You are a damn fool.

Please take responsibility for what you did to them poor innocent dogs.

by Sock Puppet on 05 September 2010 - 17:09

Jan you been in the bottle again?

This is what Hodie said.

One was a young show line female that I later found out Johannes Grewe had bred and through another cronie of his, had traded to Bartmess.

So maybe you do not know Johannes personally but someone you know does.  Can you comprehend?

Oh, OK.. After reading that again, I think I would know which bitch they are talking about. Yes, she was a zombie, on all things but fence running. She was TOO good at that! Show lines, go figure. She was traded to me for a good puppy for a friend's client, who was very pleased. I was told this bitch bit the sleeve like a maniac, and it was a lie. One half hearted nip on the jute, and she was done. Never bit a sleeve, again. Is she saw a decoy with a sleeve, she just looked at him. If it hadn't been for that one time bite, I'd have thought she never saw a sleeve in her life. Go figure..  Another one of these dogs that no one wanted. She was one of the last to go, as I recall. Yes, she did have a chronic ear infection, and she might have picked it up at the dog pound, where she had been for a couple of months. Not "The Ritz", you know? Well.. Dogs do get things like that, sometimes. If dogs didn't have issues, sometimes, there would be no work for veterinarians, would there? And, do you know who most of their clients are? Mongrels.. "healthy" mongrels.

Well, there is a certain counterproductivity to putting people on the spot for offering unwanted dogs to others. If it doesn't work out to the other party's complete delight and satisfaction, you get slammed. So, there is a risk involved in rehoming dogs, too. Obviously, the best thing to do with unwanted dogs is simply to have them euthanized. But, what about giving the dog a chance? Do they deserve that? The ones that need rescueing are the ones with issues, you know. The good ones you could give away in a constant stream. And, I did. I had the phone ringing off the hook, and everyone wanted to cherry pick and "rescue" the good ones. But, people are SO unselfish and not at all thinking of themselves, are they? Most of those dogs went very nicely into appreciative and eager hands.

If Hodie thinks it is so easy to care for dogs, and pay all the bills without knowing where the money is coming from, then she should still be in business with her rescue. Well, it's not that easy, is it? So, what are you going to do? If you punish people for failure, then maybe she should be punished, too.. Because her operation apparently failed, just like mine did. I will give her an 'A' for creative writing, though. There are some things in there that I simply do not agree with. However, I am sure that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals would uphold her rights to "free speech", so what the heck.
