Windows Movie Maker? My Windows 7 also comes with Windows DVD Maker but I haven't used it yet.

These are the ones I own and am learning to use. All three are attractively priced, pretty well equally featured, and easy for beginners to dig in. I'd say so far, I think MAGIX is my favorite, because it doesn't drag my modest machine down near as much as the others. There's reviews on each of these at http://www.videomaker.com/
Serif - Movie Plus X3
Corel - VideoStudio Pro X2
MAGIX - Movie Edit Pro 16 Plus
An excellelnt source for information

Windows Live movie maker is awful. I recently got a new laptop and instantly missed the movie maker that was on XP. However, you can install movie maker 2.6 on a Windows 7 computer. Here is a link for it:

I am sure there are better editing software out there but I was used to this program and find it works for me (and I am a complete novice at making videos). I just did a tribute video for a dog of mine and if you go to the "My Poe" thread you can view it on youtube. It was done on movie maker 2.6.

I agree, I HATE the Live Movie Maker and downgraded to 2.6 on my Windows 7 laptop. I do all my videos with this, but all I really do are pictures, edit clips, add music files, add captions, transitions. All the other software I've tried is way too much for what I do.

Wrestleman, thanks for asking this. I'm going to save it for reference.
Question for others..... How do you add music to Movie Maker? There are times I don't mind the background sounds, and others I would like something different.

On the MovieMaker - save the song on your hard drive - hit the add music button and it will give you the option to browse folders - click on the folder/click on the song/ it attaches it to your clips from the beginning of the video/slideshow. It allows you to make it cover your sound that is already in the video or let that sound bleed thru as well - it is up to you on the volume of the music.....

If you're just wanting a pretty simple finished product with not many effects, the free stuff and windows programs will work..
But if you want it to look and sound more professional, you'll need to spend on some software.
Pinnacle has a pretty easy to use product thats in the $100 range.. it won't take up too much room on the computer, and it does have DVD authoring built into it.
I cut the entire DVG Nationals last year on it... 8 hours of content, with features and awards...
However, for really nice DVD authoring (menu's, buttons, motion, etc) you might have to look into another program. I used Roxio software for authoring and burning.
Pinnacle is now owned by AVID, which is what most broadcast quality videos are produced with.
