I am looking for a companion/protection dog but have come to believe that the working dog lines from Europe are where the energy, the spirit, the intelligence and energy are most likely to be found now. I'm looking for a breeder of dogs like this. This forum seems balanced, intelligent and full of good will. I live in Downeast Maine (reason for my question). I look forward to hearing from any of you who can suggest a breeder or steer me in the right direction towards a great dog. Thanks. --Molly

The first thing you want to do is take your time and do not get in a hurry and buy the first dog you see. This sounds simple but many people make this mistake as young dogs are easy to fall in love with. Be very careful of importing a dog yourself until you research the breeder. Too many breeders might take advantage of the situation. You can find many excellent breeders here in the US that you might be able to visit the Kennel. You need to decide if you want a show line or working line. I myself stay away from AKC standard American bred dogs.

hi mraewle -- i am located in maine --near portland -- i have a very wonderful male from korbelbach and and kartahago lineages -- at 10 months of age he was doing long sends to apprehend on a full body bite suit with real stick hits and also a defending handler exercise with three guards and an escort within the same execise -- a fellow from bangor has recently seen him and thought him remarkable as do some of my police officer friends.very good obedience --i do not use the word drive but simply stated his motivation is incrdable -- if not my dog --i would have thought he was obsessive compulsive he has that much motivation .. nor did i ever evdre have to do deprivation or tactics like the crate think tank bit !!any would work with gusto any time and any place even as a pup .. but let me add i do not hide a ball in my pocket because he will sniff it out .. once he tore my pocket open when i left it on a chair to get it !! i never did so called drive promotion with this dog -- i have had teo litters with this GSD the first litter was sold sight unseen in a day -- this second littter that i just had .. three people bought a pup day two , pups unseen anbd the litter was sold out in 2 weeks -- that is good considering all thoe GSD breeders in maine !! i God willing lan on another breeding - he is V-rated and one of the best handlers ..from germany rmarked last year -- he should be in bundesseigerprufung --

You might consider asking the National Breed Warden, Karen MacIntyre... she can be found at the USA website. She is located in VT she can help guide you.

Have you tried Zwinger Von Himmel. They have some very nice imports? Located in Northeast, either Maine or Massachusettes.
