Hi,

I have a pregnant bitch (I hope)  and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to feed her.  Right now she is being fed 4Health and has been doing well on it until recently.  She hasn't been eating much at all the last few days and it is kind of worrying me.  I can't get her to eat dry kibble alone, but if I put a bit of canned food in it she will eat a little, but still not much.  This will be my first litter, so I'm a bit nervous about it all.  I've read quite a bit, but was wondering what others did themselves.  If anyone can help that would be great.

Thanks,
Haley

your girl may be at the off feed stage this can go on for a few weeks., when she gets about 5 weeks she will  eat better, all you can do is add anything to  intrest her in feeding, gravy worked well for me. i got to the point where i had to start feeding, meat and rice, just keep her eating something.

Hello, I also have a pregnant female, she is 5 1/2 weeks now. She went off her bones for a few days but aside from that she is eating whatever I offer her and that includes her kibble and I also add on rotation, beef chunks, chicken backs or frames, eggs, pasta, rice, vegatables, fish oil capsule, multi vitamins, raw meaty bones. Soon I will change her kibble to a puppy formula and give her goat milk as well.

Oh and I have also divided her food up and feed twice a day, In another week I will feed it 3 times a day.

Good luck.  When is she due?

Thanks for the advice!  She's only been eating about 2 cups a day, if that, and she usually eats 4.  She's due around October 5.  I'm very excited.   Also, is there anything I should be supplementing her with?

Thanks again,
Haley

My reproduction vet told me to feed my bitches a high protein food for the first 42 days of their pregnancy, then put them back on a regular food after that, he said the pups need the high protein for proper nutrients and development.  I have always switched them towards the end of their pregnancy to a puppy formula, but he told me to feed them the puppy formula at the beginning of their pregnancy.  So, I have a pregnant bitch now, who has always had smaller litters, I have been feeding her a high protein food so I am curious to see if their will be any noticeable difference in anything.

Bitches get morning sickness just like we do.

Looks like lots of puppies are on the way, with the soft market, I hope everyone will have an easy time selling them.

No pushing a mega amount of supplements..Let the bitch get what she needs from real food.

No calcium at all..let her get it from bones and raw meat.

I agree, no supplements please.

The bitch knows her own needs, be patient.
I usually feed a high protein all the time and ad to the fat content with whole foods not supplements.
No sudden changes.
Exercise is a must for me with pregnant bitches, not a workout , just exercise.

If she isn't eating right for a long period then maybe see the vet, or examine what it is your feeding.

Take her temperature.  If it is elevated (above 102.5), take her to the vet.
