most people make the mistake of placing too much emphasis on the sire. my advice to anyone looking for hard dogs is to pay more attention to the dam lines. if you know of a bitch with rock solid nerves and hard as nails.......get a pup out of her, provided she is bred to a compatible male. much much better chances of success bringing it in thru the dam. (who probably got it from her sire and will pass it on to her male pups)

They are out there, but not easy to find. Of course everyone has different ideas of what "hard" means, but with the way the sport has changed and the way dogs are not bred to excel at the sport, instead of the sport being a test of the dogs, a lot of the "hard" dogs aren't doing SchH, and therefore aren't well known.
It's to the point that if you don't have a really phenomenal club nearby, good luck getting a trainer to work your hard dog properly, so what's the point? I for one would rather have an untitled hard dog than a sleeve sucking SchH 3. There are lucky people with access to great clubs and trainers who still know how to train a real dog, but it can be a challenge for the rest of us.

ziegenfarm, we were posting at the same time. I totally agree! People underestimate the dams ridiculously. I have noticed just in my own limited breeding experience, that almost all of Capri's puppies are the same- exactly like HER, regardless of the sire used. SHE definitely is the one making the biggest temperamental impact on her progeny, especially her daughters, which is why so many people like her; good strong females are hard to find.

Totally agree that the dam has more impact on temperament.

I hope to be breeding a litter of such pups soon.
