I'd like to hear what others do to stop this behavior. MM says give the knee as a landing or hard spot to discourage the dogs jumping, this method has never worked for me. Moons says put your foot on the leash, sounds good if the dog has a leash attached, Moons and RS say discourage the behavior from puppyhood, what if you didn't have the dog as a puppy and you want to break this behavior. I've also heard step on the rear toes, pinch the webbing between the front toes, smack the dog on the nose. Squatting to greet the dog before he has time to jump, turning your back to the dog  ignoring him[ this one got me some serious scratches down my back]  I would assume that an ecollar would work very well in this situation  but  I have never tried it.

Hold the dog's front paws beyond the point at which he wants down before you let go.  After several times, he'll catch on.

What kind of dog do you want a year or two from now?  If you aggressively discourage jumping, you will depress his capacity to work.  I let my dogs jump on me and I let them know to be good if I'm in a suit.  Otherwise, I don't push back very much.

michael49,
Once properly trained you should not require the lead, no matter when you work with the dog.
It's much easier with puppies yes.

If a big dog wants to jump up and lick my face I'm probably gonna be glad he likes me.
He'll be my next best friend...lol

Most people just put their arms out palms open in the dogs face.

Turning and ignoring make no sense, getting down would probably work in most cases.
Your talking about changing the behavior so either way someone has to correct the dog.

I would hesitate to use an e-collar when dealing with this kind of situation involving a possible stranger, thats just me.
I'd hate to see amateurs doing it wrong.

I don't see it has a real hurdle, it's not that hard to train the dog not to jump up on people with modest corrections.

I got one myself, she does jump on those she likes and knows, strangers she doesn't like get a different greeting.
Just by approaching she gets a reaction and makes up her mind.
Sometimes I jump her shit, sometimes she's down stay in a place I put her, depends on who's pulling in.
If I want her not to go up to people a No will do.

In my situation, I have things just the way I want them.

MVF,
I do not believe this correction done properly would interfere with the dogs abilities at all.

Why do you want the dog stop jumping on you?

Not yourself, other people.

Some dogs jump on everybody, children, older people, people that are dressed to go out, In my opinion it;s a very undesirable behavior and I am curious as to what works for others.Having a dog that selectively decides who they want to jump on might be a start, but not really an answer to the problem. I appreciate the answer moons, but I'm looking for a method that actually stops this behavior completely, the word "no" works, but usually after the incident has happened or attempted to some degree.

k9ulf, some people don't like being jumped on by a large dog, especially children and older people

MVF how do you let them know when it's not ok to jump and how did you train them to know the difference? How do you prevent them from jumping on other people?

You can train the dog to sit, down or use my favorite quick command, "off".  You will have to have some control before you can give more freedom. You can attach a short leash or pull tab for a correction. It takes consistent work.  My dogs know when I'm tired of being jumped on or don't want to be jumped on. However, I like the jump up greeting and allow it, but I control it with others who don't happen to like it. ;-)
