Question, have you ever gone to a trainer who didn't send you to a group class with your nervy 8 month old dog?

by beetree on 17 August 2010 - 17:08

It is too late for the "I don't want to know" part. I hope this new trainer is everything of what you need. Sounds like your dog is not for the beginner owner. You need to get a handle on this dog or you will need to keep him away from other dogs.

Mudwick........    I had a private (behaviorist) trainer come to my house and work with Prince, this person was recommended by my AKC trainers because I did not want to go to class with Prince until I learned how to correct him properly...After receiving a bill for over $600.00 for about 4 sessions and 3-4 phone conversations ...I called it quits....I was paying for a lot of chit-chat and not much hands on .....

beetree......Prince does not have any issues with other dogs......I think you must have misunderstood my post....

by beetree on 17 August 2010 - 17:08

Glad to hear it. The trick is to keep it that way. Like I said, hope both of you, then, are in good hands with the new trainer.

Have to give you credit for your determination, most people would have given up by this time.  Seven hours is a long way to travel for what you need and still be consistent.  At this point that will be important for you, find a program that not only you can work with but is useful for the dog.  In our "microwave" society it's commonplace to stick with whatever is   most convenient and not necessarily what is most productive.  Good luck with your search, it'll all work out.  Look at it this way, your dog is getting used to long car rides.

Phil...Thanks for the post...Can you recommend any books or training videos that would be helpful??

Not a big fan of books or video for training.  Invariably, things get lost in translation from the author's lips to your ears.  Where are you located again?
