VomRuiz

So I laid my first scent pad for Caya, my 5 month old puppy.... It was a spur of the minute decision during obedience. I have very little tracking experience and know I need to really get on with it... I didn't have any flags or other markers, so I decided to "memorize" the spot by making the pad near a dead spot of grass...
Well who knew there were a bunch of dead spots?!?!
I never found the pad...

Next time, leave your hat next to the scent pad.  ;)

Every so often, I manage to load up the hotdogs, the articles, the tracking lines, the water, the water dish, the dog...

And forget the damned flags.  I've learned to be creative.

Vom Ruiz,

Don't worry... Part of the art of tracking is learning to read terrain and use "natural" landmarks... Dandelions, unusually tall stalks of grass, area before change of terrain, etc... You can also use washers with marking tape tied around them or something similar to sports field chalk... I prefer the washers with ribbon. Did you put food on the scent pad?

Also, if your dog is a little too curious about the survey flag, like my current Mali was, just put it a little farther off the scent pad and focus your dog on the food. Although I heard something about flags being done away with for wooden markers, a track marker is still something they need to get over.

And completely separate tracking from obedience!! And definitely don't begin tracking where there is a lot of traffic... Especially of you and your dog!

Thanks for the advice guys! I appreciate it :-)
I was dared to use cocktail umbrellas, so after I do that I will work with the natural landmarks ;-)

Off to work, hope everyone has a great day and this brings you a few laughs!

Tracking flags, tracking flags tracking flags. You can make them for pennies. Get some surveyor tape about $2 a roll and a box of insulation hangers from any hardware store some glue and you can make 100 of them for less than $10

Or if you ask really nicely Jim @ Hallmark might throw a few in with your next schutzhund equipment order!  Or you can go to home depot and get 25 for somewhere around $5.  You only need one anyway

I like to use carpenters chaulk.  The stuff they use with chaulk lines.  That way there's nothing on the ground that smells like me except the pad and/or track.  Flags are great but you have to touch them.  It's works good for marking corners too.  And you don't have to go back and pick it up.  It just blows away.
