So, in the spring, I bought a bird feeder and filled it up. I immediately acquired a new pet squirrel! He would empty the feeder in 15 minutes. I gave up and just poured seed at the top of my steps above the terrace, easier refill, LOL. A tiny corn stalk grew from the bird feed and I was careful to go around it when I weed-whacked.
My youngest daughter's boyfriend came to do my terrace this week while I was working. I had already done about 3/4 of it, but he finished for me, BONUS! Then, when I got home, I saw my poor little (about 24") corn stalk's body in the grass. I'm bummed, I wouldn't say anything because I'm really grateful for the help, but I was hoping to have my own home-grown corn stalk for Halloween.
Admittedly, this is a very silly post, but...
Maybe tomorrow I'll post a picture of the poor thing's remains.

I totally understand. I notice vegetation volunteers in my yard all the time, and love watching them grow, too.I actually had corn grow from one of the decorative indian corn things we hang on our doors. I have learned to put some kind of marker in the ground next to my special charges so my weed whacking DH won't level them. So sorry for the loss of your corn!
If it is any consolation for you, you probably wouldn't have had proper germination with one stalk, and then if by chance you did, your friendly squirrel would surely have beaten you to it!
