One more question, her ears are up (she is just about a year old) but they are not very firm. They are always up, but when she plays or runs, ect. they get pretty floppy. Wil they firm up as she gets older or will they always be like that? Thanks for your help!

Is it that they're floppy, or that she often lays them back?
Her hair will grow back in. It'll take some time. Take it easy on her coat with the brushing. She's young, why not get her used to the vacuum hose instead, and try to make brushing more "cost effective"?

The ears are up all the time, just get pretty flimsy when she's running or playing hard. So I guess, she kind of has "friendly ears".

Forget surgery....Jesus.
The coat if healthy will not be harmed by brushing, depending on what your using and how often.
Diet is important for the coat, also moderation.
Too much is as bad as too little.
Baths, brushing, supplements, can be overdone in my opinion.
Try an egg once in a while added to the diet and a can of salmon is something I add on a regular basis.
Keep it simple.
Shedding is something we all deal with so your not alone there.
Moons.
