If so, do the General Public support or object to this?
Thankfully, I believe that in the UK it is now almost (if not completely) non existent? (There are still some that sell kittens, but this too is becoming less popular).

Does anyone protest about puppies via Pet Shops?
Are small breeds generally the most popular?
Thank you for responding to the Topic,

I now live in northern Middle Tennessee near Kentucky. I do not see puppies in pet shops here; but I only go to the PetSmart and the PetCo since they are the only ones that have Royale Canin dog food. I am sure there are pet shops that do sell puppies, but I never visit them.
I occassionally see "Purebred with Papers" puppies for sale in the parking lots of the strip malls as I drive to work and around the tri-county area. Sadly, it is at least once per quarter that a filthy puppy mill is busted in the tri-county area where I live, and some of their operators have been busted more than once.
I lived in Fayetteville, Arkansas for five (5) years. While I was there the City of Fayetteville passed an ordinance that made it illegal to sell pets in this manner. Personally I think this was a good move, but it just made the sellers seek other territory. It was the usual breeds for sale - toy dogs and American Bulldogs. I do not remember any puppies for sale in any of the pet shops, but again I seldom visited more than one.
On a tangent - I remember a very active Greyhound Rescue that presented retired Greyhounds for adoption, and a very active Bloodhound Rescue that did the same with their dogs. Arkansas allows Greyhound racing in a couple of areas, and of course hunting is a major pastime there. I guess that many regions have their own "flavour" of dogs who are made surplus.

They sell all breeds. There are several that focus on small puppies, ie Pocket Puppies Pawsh Puppies, they buy from commerical breeders often in Missourri, where they have 50-200 breeding dogs on the premesis. I have read many USDA reports and that's how I get the information, see how many dogs they have, see the violations many of them have in animal care. Missouri is the state with the most commercial breeding operations, also Iowa, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, etc
Most stores sell many breeds, including Boxers, English Bulldog, Cattle Dogs, English Mastiff, Bullmastiff, German Shepherd, and other large breeds. And then mixes, Yorkiepoos, Maltipoos, Labradoodles, Schorkies, Morkies, Shi-a-poos, etc. Most of the pet stores offer financing, because the prices are high. I looked at Pocket Puppies and a Chihuahua was $2,000, it was very tiny. This store sold $1,350 a "teacup" Boston Terrier who died, his skull to small for his head, http://cbs2chicago.com/local/downsized.dogs.2.2.1316663.html
And a $2,000 Yorkie with epilepsy, http://cbs2chicago.com/local/pet.owners.puppy.2.1355823.html
Yet the store I mention is still very popular and in business for several years.

Dogs are living beings, NOT merchandise.

In the UK I haven't personally seen pet shops selling pups this way for a long time but I have heard it still goes on. When I was over in the States the last time a few years back I did see a shop selling pups in a window - felt like going in there a giving them a piece of my mind (couldn't believe one was a husky pup - not any different in itself from others, but hardly a dog for a climate like Phoenix I would have thought).

In Vegas puppies are a dime a dozen. Sad to say but true. I remember one day I was at the grocery store and saw a puppy mill semi unloading puppies to sell to Petland. It made me sick. AND YET people still buy from them. Thats the part I just dont get. They know that puppies come from mills and I guess it doesnt matter.
