What is the dogs risk, do you live in an area where there's ticks and lyme disease is prevalent, like the Northwest, Northeast, WI, or MN.  I personally do not get the lyme vax for my dogs, as I don't feel it's safe enough to warrant using and it has not been around that long, but do your own research.  Another reason why I would not use it is that antibiotic therapy (about a month of antibiotics) is effective on preventing lyme diease if the dog gets ticks.  I would use Frontline to help prevent ticks, the longer a tick feeds the more the risk of lyme disease.

I live in CT and yes, we are firm believers in the vaccine. It has an 80 percent effectiveness rate, per my vet. My dog suffers no side effects from the vaccine.

Before using frontline as was previously suggested research the product extensively and you will find out that it is loaded with poisons.  All you have to do is google frontline poison and you will be unpleasantly surprised.  This is also a huge reason as to why dogs wind up with skin irritations and allergies.  Frontline has been linked to cancer and other catastrophic diseases.  Basically you are putting a collar loaded with pesticide on your dog.   Do not put a pesticide collar on your dog.  Your dog is your family member and I'm sure that you would not want to harm him/her in any way.  And yes even with the pesticide collar your dog is still going to pick up ticks and don't let anyone tell you otherwise because they would be lying to you!

Rottguy- Okay, then can you please post the scientific study or research concluding Frontline is dangerous to dogs.

I live in CT, in fact I live in Lyme:)

I have not vac'd my dogs for Lyme in about 5 years.  I did the initial shot on my now 2 year old,.  They have never come up positive for Lyme, but do come up positive for equii erhlichia (anaplasmosis)...No sense in getting the shot since it only supposedly covers lyme and not the other..

We hike, are surrounded by woods. I dont use anything on the dogs, yes we have a few ticks but the ones that transmit the tick disease we'll never find anyhow, smaller than a pinhead:(

I think it's one's personal preference, myself, I don't want to overload my dogs with anything more than I aboslutely have to.

Hi and thanks for the question.  Unfortunately you may have to look up and google frontline and poison yourself and find information from there.  In fact you can find other flea/tick treatment manufacturers on there too.  I know that their is many of them so you should be busy for a while since you are interested.  I for one and any person with any sort of common sense would not put a deadly poison or any poison on my best friend/family member.  In fact if its so good why is every ingredient listed as a cancer causing poison.  Now after so many complaints and adverse reactions is the epa finally looking into this but what about all those who were victims of these poisons already?  Oh thats not something we want to talk about is it?  You wouldn't even want this on your fingers let alone all over your dogs body.  Wow a drop here,  and a drop there, and it seeps into the rest of the body and deters fleas and ticks by just a few drops.  Wow a miracle product.  Just drop some poison/pesticide on your family and wallllah like magic no fleas or ticks.  How about when you go to cuddle up with your family member?  How about when  you put your face on them and pet them?  You're putting yourself and those around your pet/family member especially children at risk.  They tell you its safe.  Who tells you?  The manufacturer?  The manufacturer who stands to profit billions by deceiving people by preying on their emotions?  Their is nothing people wont do for a family member right?  right! Thats why they can talk you into putting a poison on your dog and tell you its SAFE!!!  The manufacturers of these products are Big Business companies.  And because big business who is profiting from you says its safe and its ok then we should do it right?   WRONG!  BIG BUSINESS LIED TO YOU!!  Big business says we are not in a recession.  WE ARE!  Big business says they would contain the oil spill in the gulf  immediately.  THEY DID NOT!
Big business says put frontline/poison on your pet.
Are you willing to gamble with your family?

I believe that the following article lists a few manufacturers because I feel that I at least owe you that in case you are going to tell someone who doesnt know to use another form of a deadly poison.

And who told big buisness to drill where they did? Don't bring politcs into caring about pets I understand how you feel about the chemicals I practice alot of hollistic petcare myself but don't bring things like that in here when big buisness is keeping this nation from falling apart more than it is.

As one who only vaccinates as required and every three years or titers, after having a dog very sick and not knowing after much $$$, I would now vaccinate for it. Luckily I dont live in an area where there is a huge problem and my dogs live inside. I as well practice holistic medicine and also work in the traditional medical field. Is the risk worth the disease? Imo for some things it is not.
Someone mentioned antibiotics like that was a better option. . Too bad we cant see the real danger there.
