Hi.  I am new to this forum but feel the need to make this post after reading several threads on pdb.  I am a rottweiler guy (Hence the name) but when I was a kid my mother bought a maltese and we named him Spanky.  My mother and father have been having problems with Spanky for years with ear infections NON STOP EAR INFECTIONS!  He even started growing cysts or warts on his back.  My parents always took him to Valley Animal Hospital in NJ.  This is where I took my 1st rottweiler for years when he had skin rash, allergies, eye infection, ear infections, and all the other good stuff.  Spanky recently started acting very very lethargic and my parents took him back to the vet. AGAIN!  This time they said that they were going to run some more blood and do some more tests.  I believe my father had paid in about 4 thousand up until May of this year.  And now they want to give a scan for another $2500 and and another $1000 for some more tests.  Well this time I decided to go with them.  My parents are older and quite set in their ways and if a Dr. tells them Do It they Do It! Why?  Because its best for the dog right?  WRONG!  This jerk of a vet actually had the nerve to try to convince my parents that ear infections are Common because dogs are not suppose to have floppy ears????   Floppy Ears?   Are you kidding?  Maybe I should put stents in his ears?  Here I am listening to this guy/dr. and he is knowledgeable because he has extensive training in the veterinary field?  And during his extensive training he has discovered that dogs should not have floppy ears and they are prone to ear infections??  Well what about all the german shepherds who have ear infections why?  because their ears get floppy at night because they are sleepy?  What a Joke.  I laughed at the guy and said thank you.  I told my parents that I never ever have to go to the vet for an ailment with my rotts.  I always told them this but this time they were finally listening.  I put little Spanky on raw food.  And also my other rottweiler that still lives with my parents too.  After all he is in the vet once a month for an allergy or ear infection, etc...  Today is August 1st.  Guess what?  No one has an ear infection.  No one has a skin rash.  Both Spanky and my other dog's fur look like they just got groomed.  Their teeth and gums look great and Spanky is chasing my rottweiler around the house.  And my mother told me that she thinks that the growths on Spankys back are getting smaller!  Now if I'm just a normal Joe Schmo and I know that the food is killing dogs and cats then let me guess?  The vet doesnt know?  Sure he does but when you rape people for thousands of dollars a year times a few hundred why should they care right?  Lets face it.  We Bare No Expense when it comes to our family members and we will pay anything to help them or save them so these vets prey on our emotions and weakness.  So No surgery for Spanky.  No Body Scan.  No More Antibiotics.  No More Bull Crap Vaccines being that they like to over vaccinate everyones dogs and now I know that I wont have to put these guys down for neglect and when I say neglect I mean because I neglected to find out the truth about why dogs in this country are always sick and always wind up with cancer, kidney failure, allergies, etc... but now I did and it wont happen again!

So what is your point? Your parents dog sounded like it was falling apart and the vet wanted to find out why the dog was so lethargic? Why are you badmouthing a hospital for doing diagnostics?

by rottguy1980 on 02 August 2010 - 03:08

He has been going in for diagnostics for 12 YEARS!!!  Miraculously he is better!
Gee wonder why no on picked up on this?

Good for you, rottguy. my sister got ripped off to the tune of $10,000 in multiple surgeries by a veterinary ophthalmolgist who treated her 17-year-old LC neutered Dachshund.   Damned dog ended up having his eye removed. That was one expensive "mellon-baller"--LOL!

It sounded like diet change was the remedy. Most vets are so uninformed about diet. It was your fault for going to a vet for 12  years if he has never fixed any of the initial problems. Vets are not miracle workers, and most are not out to screw you.

I'm sorry.  Did you have a hard time reading my post?  I said my parents are very set in their ways and believe that if a Dr. tells you something then they are right considering that they are supposedly the experts not them.  My father is not a vet nor is my mother so if you are always taught that if someone is a Dr. that they are smart and very educated and to listen to them then most likely you will.   I know that vets are not miracle workers and do you know how I know?  Because U told me so!

I just don't see the point of coming here and badmouthing someone because of one 'bad' experience with a Veterinarian. Your parents dog is their responsibility. Should they take ZERO blame in the fact that the dog had on-going issues and did not seek a second opinion, regardless of them being set in their ways?

Myself, and all of those around you appreciate your concern for the well being of the Valley Animal Hospital of NJ.
I am also thrilled to see that you are concerned about my parents being set in their ways.  Thank you again for your concern.

I could care less about that hospital. You are missing the point. I work in the vet industry and am sick of seeing people blaming everything on the vets, and not stepping up and taking responsibility for the animals they chose to get. If you can't afford to pay for your pets sufficiently, don't have them. If you can, pay the bill and don't complain about it to some online forum. Find a new vet if you are not happy with the services. Not solving the problem the first time is the risk you take. That is the whole point of doing diagnostics. If something doesn't work, you try something else. I guess it is easier to blame though, than accept your responsibility.

Some vets are just plain bad. Like doctors or anything else. I know of an emergency vet near me who should have never became a vet. She is a nasty vile excuse of a woman who charges outrageous prices and treats everyone like shit. Like it is all there fault. Please if you are going to be a vet have some compassion for the animals and people who visit you.
