Or does this dog seem... structurally off?
Can anyone tell me *what* would cause a dog to present this way?

What do you see wrong with this dog?

I think it has a lot to do with the angle of the camera versus the angle of the dog walking down a slope... I also think that that may be a young dog in it's awkard teen stages. A level shot of the dog from a specific angle would be more telling IMO.....

They might also have the dog doing what I've heard termed the 'Straight head heeling.'.
I've seen a couple videos of this style of fussing and I don't like the way it looks because it sinks the dog deep on his back hocks which too me makes him look like a hock walker but it does make his front legs look all prancy.
Here is a video.

Looks fine to me, young dog, as the ad states, walking down hill, excited by a toy or treat....what's wrong with that? In a year or 2, after he's filled out, he'll look like a different dog, I would think, a pretty nice one, too! JMHO jackie harris

I Have seen that ad before. In my opinion, I think he appears to be a very young dog, that with time will mature into a very nice adult. I don't see what you could be talking about that could be structurally wrong...Considering the way he is moving, I don't see any other way he could possibly move more correctly....
JUST MY OPINION...

Nothing wrong with that structure, I would deem nice front reach for a working dog.
There was a video posted a while back of a stunning 300 point dog, if you watch him heel, he had a prance while perfectly straight at heel position, watching his handler. This pup reminds me of him.

Nah, I agree with the OP. He's walking on his hocks. I don't care how old he is. if this dog had a killer pedigree and great scores, I'd ask for more video and probably ant to see him in person. I've seen dogs grow out of it, but it would definitely be a concern of mine. May be a super dog, but I'd look into it if seriously considering the dog

Some train their dogs to put their weight on their rear rather than on their front which makes it easier to execute a left turn without tripping over the dog. It appears to me to be exactly that. This kind of heeling does make the front end "prance" but it makes for a clean exhibition of heeling. I think the pup is fine, just "struttin' his stuff".

I disagree sam, I've seen many dogs, while heeling, keep their hind end low when they are anticipating a halt so they are prepared to sit. I would not judge movement from a still photo, especially an obedience photo.
