Hi friends...I need some help. ........I told a friend who is even more ignorant about the sport than I am that I attended my first Schutzhund trial. Her response...."What is Schutzhund " I wanted to give a short , but accurate description in less 15 words......How would YOU answer this question?..............Thanks

Its a breed worthiness test for GSDs that eventually evolved into a sport.

mudwick.....I like what you posted, but tell me in your opinion is it still a breed worthiness test for GSD?....Ruger1

I train with several people that have spayed females, so a good number of us are doing it just for the sport. Not sure if we have an unusually high number of people who feel this way or if this is consistent in many clubs/or training venues.

Ruger,
I should have included "former breed worthiness test" in my original post.
No, I don't see modern Schutzhund as having much value as a breed worthiness test.
Even in 1925 von Stephanitz was warning against training and testing in only one venue, particularly when that venue was "sport".
And frankly, I like Sam's definition better.

It is a sport, a competition, and a routine.
The tests have been somewhat watered down in my opinion from it's original conception, in this country (USA).
I do not know about Europe or the rest of the world.
Why 15 words or less.

Moons....I correspond with her on FaceBook and I wanted to sum it up quickly. Actually I have been asked lately by other friends and family about the sport and always seem to have a hard time summing it up before they become board with my explanation..."The sport of Shutzhund was originally developed"..blahh..blahh..blahhh. None of my friends or family care that much to listen to my 10 minute speech on the topic........
