There was a scam uncovered recenlty in Florida relating to K-9 vests and fund raising for them. How are the donations tracked? Additionally, the facts in the scam case, uncovered FL depts don't use vests on their dogs because of the heat. I guess that MA uses them mostly in the winter?

K9 Kilo of Hernando County Sheriff's Dept. in FLA was shot three times in August of 2010. One of the shots was to the chest. K9 Kilo is alive and well and has returned to work. His bullet protective vest saved his life.
Kilo was wearing a Point Blank bullet protecitve vest. I have spoken to the Hernando County Sheriff's dept. about this several times. They have the vest at their dept. with the bullet still embedded in it.
If you google K9 Kilo of Hernando County Sheriff's dept. you can watch video footage of an interview with his handler.
So in this particular instance a vest was used in FLA. It is up to the discretion of the handler. I imagine that the handler would not leave the vest on his K9 partner for a long period of time due to the heat.
Regarding Massachusetts K9s, the handler will also use their discretion based on the situation.
I hope this helps to clarify.

I use mine on all high risk calls; Due to the heat and humidity here in the south I take it off between calls or depending on the call as well. They are a great tool however.
