Krazy Bout K9s

by Krazy Bout K9s on 28 July 2010 - 13:07

Okay people, I need to pick your brains. I have a couple having to move back to England for family reasons, no way around it. They have a 2 1/2 yr old GSD female that is the love of their life, great with their kids. They are worried about the 6 month long quarrantine period, they will not be able to visit the dog much, since they will be about 6 hours north of where the quarrantee area is.  This is what she wrote me...anyone have any other ideas or is this the only way they can get the dog into England to live with them there sooner.???
Otherwise I am picking her up on Sunday to try to find the right home for her. They are moving next March...
Her name is Brit, go figure , and is one of the good GSD's, good with cats, kids and other dogs, these people trained her right, Thank God... She will be easy to place, but I would really like to keep her with her family...PHOTOS BELOW...
Thanks for any help, Steph
They think it will be too hard on the dog to go through all this...

"She would need a vet passport, about $1000 plane ticket, and she would spend nearly 16-20 hours cooped in a kennel between 3 different flights. In England, she would be placed in quarantine ( England is a rabies free country, America is not ) for up to 6 months... where we would only be able to see her intermittently. She'd be in London and we would be further north in Manchester, about a 4-6 hour trip. She would undergo more testing etc... I personally, think it would be very hard on her and there is no guarantee we would have her home with us within 6 months."

Since they know they are moving FOR SURE I would send the dog to family or friend (I assume they have family/friends there since they are going back) ahead of time......there is no way around the quarantine!  It will also allow them to get packed and moved without the dog being in the middle of all the hecticness!  I also wonder.....do they have to pay for boarding while in quarantine?

A horseback riding acquaintance of ours moved to England with her husband a few months ago and did not need to quarantine her two dogs. They were transferred by the U.S. government.
Unfortunately, I do not have an email address for her, so I can't ask what she did.
But here is a link to detailed explanations from the appropriate department in the UK: www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/index.htm

Thanks Chris and Vickie,
I will check into it. I am amazed that 6 months would be required...

It is crazy, yes, I think they have to pay for the boarding/quarantine.  There was someone on another GSD board who did it to move to Ireland.  6 months, no way around it.  They were allowed to visit dog the more often than usual I believe.

Yes, I checked. They can take their dog to the UK without quarantine if the dog has not left mainland U.S.A. within the last 6 months. It is all explained in the so called PETS scheme in the above link. And the U.S. (mainland) belongs to the permitted country list.
Amazing that people want to give up their beloved family companion without even trying to find out what is possible.
If they cannot understand the requirements in the above link, they should contact the UK Embassy here in Washington DC on Massachusetts Ave. . Here is that link: ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/
If all else fails, I know that people traveled for years with their dogs between mainland Europe and England through the Isle of Man or Jersey. Maybe, one of our English members can elaborate on that.

If they act fast they can bring the dog through the PETS scheme without any quarantine.

1) Microchip Dog
2) Rabies vaccination
3) 1 month after vaccination rabies titre test
4) if test passed can travel to UK without quarantine after 6 months from the date of the test.
5) must be treated for ticks/worms at least 24 hours but no more than 48 hours before the dog flys out.

Must be done in this order, above is the basics, full details for their vet are on the DEFRA site, it is a very simple procedure, we use it all the time for taking our dogs in and out of the country when we show in Europe.

The only thing is they aren't moving till next March of 2011...

If they sent the dog over now with the PETS program there wouldn't be anyone there to take the dog. Mother is very frail and can't walk the dog, that is why they are moving, hubby is from there and going to take care of Mom...nephew is in the UK navy so is gone alot...

I will send her this info and see if anything helps.
Thanks so much guys,
I won't be on here till later tonight, have to work some and then chiro appt out of town...

I took the time and checked the DEFRA website. They can take their dog accompanied when they leave. However, they have to make sure that their travel route is one of the approved ones listed in this pdf.file - check out page 3/4: www.defra.gov.uk/wildlife-pets/pets/travel/pets/documents/noneu-air.pdf
