try a diet with a lot of carrots

Carrots or beta carotene suplements will make the coat more red. If you give too much you can make the black hair have a red highlight in the sun. You can feed sardines for the health of the coat, but you dog will not grow more hair than the dog is genetically predisposed to have. Some dogs just have light pigment and not much hair mo matter what you do. That's where knowing the genetics behind your dog will help you.
