Can anyone tell what what potential problems may come up with linebreeding on Uran? I am considering purchasing a dog who has Uran behind her over 7 times within the 6 generation pedigree.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

The only bad thing that I have observed is the fading black saddle with age. I really dislike that.

Uran v Wildsteigerland has been credited with producing pituitary dwarfism ........
I don't remember the source, it may have been Willis' book on genetics

I had an Uran son for many years. He did produce some darfisum...4 puppies in over 400 produced.(he was a popular stud dog) There is no perfect dog. We need to be aware of the potential problems, and try to breed away from them, but virtually all top German show lines come through Uran because he produced so many exceptional dogs. It's the old baby and bathwater thing.

I am quit shure that all top dog today have some uran on its blood lines beacuse uran¿s mother is also qando arminius mother (palme). uran had passed some monochirdism and also some light coat but the movement that some dogs have came from uran its your call question what is the linebreeding 4, 4 ? 4-5 this is not representative in genetics terms only 3-3 is important far from this is irrelevant

I've done myself some research on this subject in Finland and found out that Uran has left some Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and allergies.

Reply to Miu in Finland. I am sure if you look far enough you will find every possible problem has been produced by Uran. You will find this to be true of any dog that has produced many thousands of puppies, grand puppies, etc. from seveal hundred (perhaps thousand)different females. What matters is how often does the problem happen, and does it happen more with certain female lines than others (remember, the dogs all have mothers too!)

why the line breeding on Uran so much ??? i know he was the cornerstone the last 20 years for most of the showline GSD ... but you mean to say .../ there is only one good GSD to set breeding upon ?? reflect on that .. secondly ... if you want a showline GSD -- well it is almost a breed / horse of a different color mliterally and figuratively unto itself -- reflect on that --- next.. ther IS NO PERFECT GSD -- yeah line breeding 6 generations --- great genetics there -- you just kept all the deleterious genes and traits foremost to boot !! and as a bonus you just cut down the genetic variability to stregnthen the breed -- YEAH just what i personally love to see in the breed -- you know what i have seen in 25 to 30 years of line breedin --- money.. what will it take to make the most -- most everybody puts the GSD secondary --- my dream to have a GSD from the 40's , 590's and 60's --- a real GSD-- no wonder just about all my friends have switched to the blegium malinois -- with those gentics of GSD linebreeding .. i have a hard time faulting them. so out of curiousity --- without judgement --- why do you want a dog linebred on uran ???? there is a lot og good GSDD stock around still .. why not another dog ????

Hi guys,
thank you for all the input. I do take everyones input seriously. The reason I am looking at this dog is one of my best friends has her. She is only 10 months old and she just has too many dogs at her kennel. She is a hard and tough bitch, very dominant and beautiful, nice reach and movement, great confidence and prey drive. I want to do schutzhund with her. She also has a solid black DDR line female I am considering and black sable male out of DDR lines. I haven't gotten the pedigree of the other female nor the male yet, so am waiting on those. I just want to make the best informed deicision and was surprised when I saw that she was linebred this heavily on Uran. This is a well respected breeder who produced this dog (not the lady who owns her now) and I was wondering WHY she would linebreed so much on him. There must have been a reason.
Any other input is appreciated.
Oh...one more thing, she does not have a predominantly black nose! it's like a pink stripe down the middle, which doesn't really bother me that much except that I am wondering if this is caused by lack of pigmentation because of Uran. ????

JGA: these offsprings are near offsprings of Uran, not anything like 4 to 5 generation linebreedings.
Of course, if you linebreed enough times on distant generations in some dog, you can get out of what it produces.
But now I'm talking about dogs which have Uran near, on 2-3 generations. There are sure signs of EPI and allergies.
I know that world isn't ready to regonize and accept these problems, because we are talking about dog which is one of the major contributors in most of show line dogs' pedigrees.
Both EPI and allergies are diseases which are linked to dog's nerve system. Also, Uran has left some character problems, which shows that the dog's nerves aren't the best as possible. And the stressing/nervous nature is linked to nerve system etc.
