I don't know that I would call it a "gun" as it really more resembles a pair of pliers with a rack at the end for holding your collection of letters and numbers but I wouldn't waste my money on one now either way.  In the past, I have always tattoo'ed, microchipped and DNA'ed my dogs but I find the tattoo unnecessary at this point.  Tattoos are easily copied/faked; microchips require a lot more knowledge and effort to copy and DNA in absolute.  Chip your dogs, register the chips and DNA them and you should be fine.

Leerburg Kennel carries Hauptner Tattoo Pliers, ink, and accessories. You can find them other places too, I believe directly from Hauptner in Germany.

I don't think the tattoo is useless.  For me it is SO much easier for shows and trials.  Chip readers are expensive and you have to have your own.  At our last trial the club specifically stated they will not provide one.  My friend had to either buy one for her chip for $300 or give the local shelter $100 deposit to borrow theirs.  With my dog's tattoo I don't have to do anything.

I think ALL dogs should be chipped and properly registered, regardless of tattoos.  The tat is just something easy if you do a lot of shows and trials and don't want to have to worry about the chip reader.  It is free to get a dog tattooed and doesn't require a $300 chip reader afterward.
