I'm ready to send out for Georgia's scorebook, but I have a question about tattoos. I had to shave some fur out of her ear (hair trimmer, not a razor blade) and while her tattoo makes sense one of the numbers is upside down. It says "VA05L03" and the 3 is upside down. She was bred by vom Alyeska kennels in 2005 and is from the "L" litter. I first thought I was reading the tattoo upside down which is why I shaved the fur to see it more clearly, but it makes no sense flipped around.
I looked at some photos of the tattoo machines, it looks like it would be easy to just flip the number tile the wrong way resulting in an upside down number. Would this cause any issue matching the tattoo to her scorebook?
We are just doing schutzhund for fun, so I'm not concerned about this except that I want to be able to take a shot at doing a trial.

My Tattoo gun will not allow a number to be put in upside down. I'm not sure about others.
Maybe you should consider inserting a microchip. Its easer to read and most clubs now have microchip scanners.

She does have a microchip - I'll have to ask tomorrow at training if they have a scanner. I'm really new to this club, but they are super organized so I bet they do.

If you are ordering the score book - you put down what your dog's tatoo is. Just write it down exactly the way it appears in your dogs ear. You might be doing schutzhund for fun - but that tatoo is your dogs identifying mark and working for schutzhund titles is hard work for you and for your dog. You have to be able to identify the dog at the trial or you can not compete.
Not all clubs have scanners. Not all scanners work on all microchips either. It is the responsibility of the handler to have a scanner with them - you can't leeave it up to the club to "maybe have a scanner"....
To me, there is enough worry about the routines themselves - I don't want the added worry of the scanner. Especially if I don't have one to take with me....
I guess you can figure what I have...

So if the "3" is upside down, I should write it that way on the scorebook form? I have it sitting right here on my desk waiting to be sent in - I'd rather redo the form than get to a trial and have an issue because the scorebook doesn't match the tattoo. That's my main concern - my experience in most things is that it's easier to find the answers upfront than to try to fix a mistake after the fact, especially with anything that involves bureaucracy and paperwork.

Yes - redue your form to reflect your dogs tattoo.... When you are at a trial - you do a entry form - which then the secretary puts the tattoo on the score sheet - the judge just verifies from that - it has to reflect what is on the score book as well...
Why spend more unnecessary money ...your dog has a tattoo - the scorebook should reflect the tattoo that is present on your dog.. No matter if the numbers - letters or what ever are upside down - you could have some crazy symbol on the tattoo, as well - the breeder chose the tattoo - it doesn''t matter if it is upside down - I am sure it has a meaning to the breeder....
Get your scorebook and be done with it..

Yes, with some older tattoo machines it's possible to set the numbers in mirror image. This is why the number should be tested on a piece of paper before applying it into the ear....but some ppl forget.
And then there are people that use the mirror 3 as an E because their E got lost....
Yes, you should enter your dog's tattoo number into the scorebook exactly as it appears. A mirror image doesn't matter to the judges, it just has to be exactly the same as in the scorebook.
Much success with your trial(s)!
