Silbersee

I am in somewhat of a shock! We wanted to send our Olympia over to Germany for a breeding in a couple of months and I was just quoted a price of $ 500 one way (Lufthansa). That is a total of $ 1,000 accompanied, not being shipped. The dog is flying with a family member, back and forth. Now, my travel agent inquired about the price and passed it on to me. I am hoping that somebody made a mistake somewhere and will call Lufthansa myself later (have to go on an errands run right now). Does anybody have any comparisons (not shipping charges but accompanied) for me with other airlines?
It is mind boggling how expensive everything is and how much longer we can afford to send our dogs overseas. By the time a litter is born you will have spent about 5 to 6K already. Don't even think about the possibility of a female not getting pregnant.

Many kennels overseas are feeling the pinch. They cannot compete because shipping costs are so high.

By the time vet certification and kennel is added its $700!

Chris,
When I went in January, it was $400 for the trip over.  Coming back, we got some kind of a break...was at the check in for my female and was told there was no charge...wished I could have brought another one or at least one for someone else to get such a great break. (The weather was terrible that day and we were lucky to get there on time.)  I certainly didn't question anything and thanked them...got the dog checked in and hurried to the terminal to get on the plane.

Goodluck and I hope you can get everything worked out.

Don't know about overseas but a year ago I flew a 25 pound 8 month old ACD in a 300 crate from MT to PA with me as baggage and it cost 250 bucks each way....

Chris,
United and Lufthansa are charging $500 each way (with a passenger).
It is outrageous!.....try shipping on American Airlines....they were still $150 in November, when my dog's flew back from Germany with a friend.

Why not shipp semen nstead?  It would be much less expensive and your bitch would be at home not in a strange setting and to me most importantly you would not be shipping a potentially pregnant female.

My wife went to Poland (polish airline  - LOT) month ago and she paid $150.00.

Judy,
I believe that the SV does not recognize "shipped or frozen semen".....I understand that a "natural" breeding must take place.
Perhaps, I am incorrect.....but it has always been my understanding as such.

Judy P,
I do not do artificial insemination. It is not allowed in Germany anyway and no stud dog owner would send it. So, that was never an option. Plus, Pia would go to the person who she lived with for a year when she was titled to SchH3. That should not be stressful at all. On the contrary, it is like going to her second home.
Robin,
I just could not believe it. Last year, I paid $ 300 one way and/or 200 Euros from Germany. Amazing, how they increased their prices. American Airlines is not an option now since my daughter is already booked on LH and she is a minor who needs to fly directly (nonstop) to her grandparents. I have given her a dog to take with her in the past too because the airlines have to take care of everything from getting the dog out of the airport to taking care of customs. That is part of paying the "unaccompanied minor" fee of $ 90. So, Pia will stay home this year. We have two girls already in Germany for breeding (whenever that will be), since both finished  their titles and breed surveys. It is just painful how everything goes up.

They must have just increased the price because I went in May and early June and it was $400 each way on Lufthansa when I accompanied the dog.
