I'm new to this site and also looking at purchasing a Registered German Sheperd pup.

I'm interest in purchasing a certain pup but want to make sure I know what I'm doing.
Is he registered when I pick him up?  Do I get a certificate with him?  Is there a fee to
register him?

Thanks

Wade

Typically, the breeder will have registered the litter and you will be given a registration application that you will then use to register the pup.  The process and fees are detailed on the AKC website.

Thank you for the information.

So I fill out the papers and submit them to AKC.  I also pick the name?
What about the tattoo, do I do that?  Do they HAVE to be tattoo'd?
I'll look on AKC website and find pricing.

Technically, the AKC gives you the right to decide the registered name but some breeders may ask you to register the pup with the name they gave it and their kennel name.  Either way, you are free to call the dog anything you'd like.

I think the cost to register an individual puppy is $20.  There is no mandatory tattoo requirement by AKC.

When the puppy is paid for in full, you should get the certificate at that time.  So if you go to get your puppy and pay cash or write a check, then you should definitely leave with both the puppy and the individual registration application.  Make sure it's signed!

Good luck with your new pup Wade!

Here is a little info I have listed on my site. It may be of some help in starting to understanding it all. http://vonhartwin.com/AKC.html

Some breeders still tattoo but most have gone to the microchip now. The tattoo is no longer "required".

edited to include link :)
