So I'm sure most of you guys have heard of the well known Tiekerhook kennel with Koos Hassing.   I like his dogs and have a lot of respect for him, and would even consider getting a pup from him..........but what is the point behind the "food drive" video with Max van Tiekerhook. He calls it food drive, when it seems to me it's just pure aggression over the food. Though the information on the video also says something about defense drive too.  He does it to Max first, and then he does it to a Max daughter, Catch van Tiekerhook.  Basically encouraging that behavior over the food and provoking it.    Any ideas on that?  I'm not creating a post to bash the breeder,  in fact I think quite highly of him, but I didn't understand that.

Heres the link if you haven't seen it before.

I certainly don't understand it and don't like it .... and the point ??

I have never seen anything like that... Wow! I don't like it, but maybe I am stupid. I would not like my dog showing aggression to me over food or a toy, and I would not want to stress my dog while he is eating... Especially a German Shepherd with their numerous organ problems and digestive ailments.

I like the Tiekerhook kennel also but I am not a fan of this video. I think  a lot of dogs would act out like this if messed with while eating.  I see the aggression due to the fact the dog is being flanked and the bowl being kicked around. (not due to the food)

I agree. I understand wanting to have a dog that has food drive so they are willing to work for their food. But in my opinion this is showing food aggression, not drive. I am not trying to bash the kennel either, just saying my opinion on the short video. Hopefully someone can get on and explain this? Maybe I have it all wrong.

This video has been posted here before.

It's idiotic in my opinion, I don't care who it is doing it.

That is NOT how to teach food drive. I hope who ever is doing that to the dog gets bit. Sorry but that is crule to do to the dogThat is a dangerous thing to have a dog do.Wonder if it was a kid that walked up to the dog while it was eating.ALL my dogs have great food drive and I can put my hands in their food or take it away or have someone else do it and they don't show any aggression. I just don't tolerate that and don't see how anyone else would want their dogs to be like that.I would think that it would be a liability.

Food Drive ? It would be interesting to know the reasoning behind this video too, I think.

Maybe this is the difference between a working kenneled dog and a working + house dog or family dog ?

Why anyone would want this behavior is beyond me. No wonder dogs maul children when they get loose. All kids ever do is want to give treats and pet dogs.

I thought food drive was when you hold up an OK sign and the dog does anything you want, thinking your holding a crumb of some sort ? My dogs are crazy though. lol

There is no sense in that video at all that is nothing to do with food drive but aggression well to me it is, and to even want that when the dog turns to nip the hand that is feeding him or her is stupid i do not care who's video it is
I will not think he will get many fans if that is how he wants Dogs to react when being fed Just think of a small child just going over and touching a Dog in that state of mind the Child would not be around too long
Perhaps I have it completely round the wrong way regards feeding
i train my Pups to eat from my hand for two weeks solid, fingers and all go through the mill but i deem it a part of training and sociability and for the Dog to know who gives it its food meaning it can then rely on me and trust me,
Then as it grows on i periodically take a handful of food from its bowl whist it is eating, Never will i get any aggression from the Dog but i give it the food right back so it eats it from my hand, and i have done this in practice for 60 years
But looking at this Video seems i am doing the opposite to what i should be doing
