Looking through MANY breeder's websites, particularly looking at DDR lines, I have found VERY few dogs with OFA elbow certifications.  (NOT pointing fingers here!)  Most breeders at least have taken x-rays of their dogs' hips, even if they didn't pass OFA, were prelims, or weren't submitted, but elbows are rarely mentioned.  OFA statistics would lead you to believe that ED is just as common as HD in our breed, so why do elbows seem to be so overlooked?  Do breeders just not look at them because ED doesn't seem to be as crippling and therefore not a big issue for the breed?  Or is it that many just don't or wouldn't pass so they don't mention it?

I think some people think elbows aren't a big problem, I have heard those remarks before, though according to OFA I think you're right, I believe they state that it is more likely to be hereditary.

Look harder.

I don't believe in pre-lim's and mine are OFA'd at two.
Hips and elbo's.

Go ahead, point fingers, it will require both hands.

Just my two cents.

Bad elbows IMO are way more crippling than hips, I have had dogs with bad elbows and bad hips . I xray everything hips and elbows. Had OFA grade a dog stage one (the mildest) personally thought they were terrible and sent them to the SV they came back severe.

Most important to have both Hips and Elbows Certified, Dogs do not walk on Two Legs

I had my Axel ofa,d at 2 years of age, Ofa good hips and grade 1 djd at 8 years old he got hurt at a trial and we did xrays and I had them shoot his elbows and sent to a k9 orthopedist his report stated clear elbows!. the problem with OFA is everything is subjective.

Eurosport posts x-rays on their site - both hip and elbow......

Maybe you're checking the wrong sites

All radiographic examinations are subjective. There is virtually no difference between the examination methods used by the O.F.A., S.V., B.V.A., or F.C.I. There is virtually no difference in what each registry defines as a dysplastic joint. The only scheme that differs substancially is the Penn-Hip method. I, for one, have never used it but I do see it as another good tool.

The single most important difference between the registries concerns the minimum standard that each will allow regarding passing joint construction. It is not my purpose to piss off anyone; but the S.V. has the lowest minimum standard and the the B.V.A. has the highest minimum standard. Now, the S.V. does use a Zuchtwert scoring system that is of some merit; so it makes sense that they can allow a lower quality of passing joint if the Zuchwert numbers support it.

At least the S.V. has acknowledged that the heritability risk for elbow dysplasie is somewhat higher than that for hip dysplasia and are now requiring the elbow examination. That said; I do not doubt that many S.V.-registered dogs have elbows of substandard quality because they were never examined. Only through their offspring will we determine where problems occur and breed away from them.

Personally, I examine elbows just as I do hips and require them to pass.

Elbows are now required for a KKL rating. My older male is 7 hips and elbows were done in Germany and all was clear at age 2. OFA here is the states after import and some working Hips good elbows showed wear and tear after all the work.

brought in a new Czech male and OFAed him as they would not take the czech rating for a KKL OFA good hips clear elbows.

also brought in a 12 month old male who just got rated 0/0 hips and elbows in czech and once return of his papers will be sent to germany for rating also to get a KKL after his sch1.

Alll my dogs are Czech/DDR and all have passing hips and elbows from OFA or A stamp.. We are doing it just neeed to look in the right places...:)

I OFA hips and elbows on any dog I have raised from a puppy. That means waiting until 2 years, of course.

I have bought a couple of mature adult (5+ years) bitches who didn't have elbow xrays although they did have "a" stamps on hips. Thankfully, now that elbows are required for the German breedsurvey, it's more common to see the elbows done on imported dogs.

I generally think that if a dog has elbow problems it doesn't hide, not like hips. The elbows are either bad and painful or they are fine. I've had a few vets say that as well. I've yet to hear of a dog with bad elbows who was pain-free. Is this pretty much what others have experienced?
