K-9mom

Hey all - I know I am not necessarily in the correct place but I am getting desperate. As some of you know I am also an ACO here in CT (besides my own GSD hobbies). Currently we have in my kennel, a 19 month old, Purebred American Staffordshire Terrier who is friendly with people, very high drive, will do anything for a ball/toy, has begun search work for the ball and he is through the roof. He is good on slick surfaces, will jump up onto objects 4ft to search, will search under vehicles, on loose footing, uneven footing, will work around other dogs, and currently has an aggressive alert when he finds the ball. He would be ok as a pet for someone who will take the time to train him but really he "has" it to be a Detection Dog. Unfortunately I have been trying all the PD's and K-9 Organizations in the New England area and no one will consider an Am Staff. I have had him now 6 weeks and he only has 1 or 2 weeks left as my Supervisor is on me about his time being up. He is current on all vaccines, deworming, and on HW Prevention, just not yet neutered. We are in CT.

If anyone has any idea's, please contact me via PM.

Thanks

K-9 Mom (aka: Tina)

Hello, I am inquiring about the am staff. I have friends that may be interested in him. They work with am staffs/ am bulldogs. I in the past have also worked them. I have G. Shepherds at this time. Could you send any pictures of him so I can show some of my friends. I am located in N. Carolina. you can send them to  calkevfen@aol.com

Thank You,

I;ll ask around here. Our state patrol has taken several pit bulls from me, and the local prisons have used them too.  Pretty sure his hips are OK? Staffs are really high percentage HD.  Thanks for helping this dog, I'll see what I can do.

Is he truly an am staff or possibly a pit? Pits have a very low percentage of HD.

NoCurs -
Thanks for asking around. He is very sound and has no limitations jumping up and over things at this time.

Today I had him out at a new park and hid the ball in the back of the guard rail. He went about 30ft, almost passed it but turned around jumped up and over the rail, started pawing the area and barking and he pulled it out from behind the post.

Also with an L shaped bench with the ball stuffed under the unside corner, he crawled under the bench, barked and kept sticking his head up until he was able to reach it. Does the same when hidden under a vehicle. He's phenominal!!

I also took him swimming today and he loved it.

He's a beautiful APBT.  Have you placed an ad in the local paper?  Seems like someone would adopt him in a heartbeat. When you seek a home out of state, there are too many whoops to jump through.

He's not an American Staffordshire, doesn't fit the standard they must have black noses only.  Looks like a Pit Bull or Pit Mix, or possibly purebred APBT, he's a red/red nose, gold eyes.  Looks like a nice dog.

Thanks.... Yes, we have advertised him for 6 weeks. The problem is when you run an ad, with so many in the shelters, what would make someone want to drive out to look at just another Pit Bull? He's just one fish in the sea of so many.

He very well could be an APBT. When the owner (who is the breeder) signed him over she wrote that he is an Am Staff and all his medical records say Am Staff so we never questioned it. After looking at the standard, you are correct, it does say they must have a black nose. I never knew that (guess you learn something new everyday!). whatever he is.. I would put him up against most any Labrador work candidate.........
