How do you introduce an orphaned pup to another mother's litter?
Will it put the other pups at risk?
Any tricks?

yes, good mothers will often accept foster puppies of similar age. Worth a try. If not, then your friend will have to get supplement milk and tube-feed the single puppy, if it's mother's milk is really drying up (why would it be, has he checked all nipples - could be some are drying up if the puppy is only nursing on one or ttwo.
If you introduce the new puppy into the litter - take the mother out, clean the bedding/area really well, put down clean/fresh everything. Meanwhile put the new puppy in a box or tight space with your litter, let them mingle (and scent will be mixed up as well). Put your hands all over all of the puppies as well. Leave the puppies all together in the tight space (so they are all touching each other, climbing on each other etc) for as long as possible. Then let mom back in, let her sniff the puppies in the box first. Then, put puppies one by one into the whelp box and on to mom's nipples - put the foster pup in somewhere in the middle (after a couple of her own pups, before a couple more) - watch her carefully. Of course if she acts aggressive towards it, remove it immediately - more likely she will accept it (watch for her cleaning the pup) - if she pushes it away, put it back, let it nurse, watch for her cleaning it. If she cleans it, all is well and she has accepted it. If she keeps avoiding it, or pushes it away, or acts aggressive - then it probably won't work.
