Does anyone know how dogs are affected by altitude or if they need different degrees of acclimatisation to us humans? I'm planning a trip next year which will involve walks up to just 4000-4500 feet max so not so high, but we live close to sea level where we are, and the most the dog will get to until then will be 800 feet (still young so not taking out for serious walks until early next year). May not take dog, just curious on others' experience.

I live at about 6000ft and take my dog hiking up to 10,000 - 12,000 ft during the summers. I don't really notice any difference. Just make sure the both of you have plenty of water to drink. I asked my vet once about it and he just said that it can effect their eyes. I think he was talking about over an extended period of time though. That's about all the info I can give....sorry, I'm sure there's more to it.

I live at 6000ft and have gone up to 10000with my dogs.A friend of mine goes hiking with his dog uo to 14000 and the dog is fine.Just have water for your dog and you and take a break if you notice your dog being tired. I know when i moved to this place that is so much higher then where I lived...I had a problem breathing. It just takes time to get use to it.

Interesting topic!
Altitude sickness can affect them (like us) and they may take a little while to acclimate. It can affect their breathing and heart rate. If you take it slow you both should be fine :-) Enjoy the trip!
