If you were to choose between TOTW or Solid Gold which one would you choose?

jyl,

This is a tuff call because they are different products and each dog is different but I feed TOTW High Praire to my GSD.  He does great on it.
I've heard S.G. is a great product too, but again if you're trying to choose by replies to your question, it will make it more difficult for you as so many people have so many opinions, likes and dislikes.
But to sum this up, both products are good and either way, you won't hurt your dog.

I think both products are good...I feed TOTW (Salmon-Pacific Stream Canine Formula) to my dogs...mainly because of the Protein content and I like the fact that they're getting the oils from it...But others feed the other lines of TOTW and do fine...My wife likes the Fowl-Wetlands Canine Formula brand of the TOTW for her Yorkies...they like it better and seem to do fine on it...
Although I feed the Salmon TOTW...I feed twice a day and one time I feed TOTW and the other Raw Chicken...I also give them some Vegetables and Fruits cooked in the Chicken blood and mixed with Pasta...
But what I would do is to choose one of the foods that your interested in and feed it for say 2 months and see how your dogs do on it and then go from there...Although I choose a dry food for them...they are the ones that make the final decision...It all depens on how they do on it...
There are a lot of factors that go into choosing a dog food...Type of dog...Their condition...What particular needs do your dogs have (maybe skin conditions/diet needs)...Their environment (weather/soil and vegetation type)...and finally your dogs them selves...do they like the food and will they eat it and do generally well on it...Oh...there's one more factor to add into the equation and that is Price...

I never had one dog do good on Solid Gold, probably because of the grains in it.  All of my dogs, four Huskies, and my German Shepherd do great on Taste of the Wild.  The Huskies do fine eating all of their food in one feeding, they require 2 and 1/2 to 3 cups a day, and I feed half Salmon, half the one that has Duck.  The one with Bison is good, first four ingredients are meats, but it seems too rich for my guys stomachs, very loose stools, constipation, etc......the bison from Taste of the Wild and Solid Gold seemed to have the same results on my dogs.   The Salmon/Duck are doing great though.

Solid Gold is one of the better quality "grain" foods - TOTW is a no-grain food.  I think it's a no-brainer, myself.  TOTW.

Not to ask a dumb question but are we talking just Solid Gold or Solid GOld Grain free formula? If we are comparing both grainfree formulas then go for the least expensive if it works for your dog.

I tried the TOTW at the recommendation of a trainer but my GSD developed a yeast infection within two weks and I switched back to raw.

I used to feed Solid Gold Barking at the Moon. Ive since gone back to raw (its cheaper than bagged food these days) I saw the other day how the diet has changed and thats too bad since it was so good in the beginning. If your going to spend so much money on TOTW consider going raw.  I cant believe that its still cheaper to feed raw. More time to prepare but still the best imo.

Oh and Ive fed several other of the SG foods. They seem to dry the coat and dont have enough fat in them to maintain a high energy dog.
