Thought I'd share my experience from yesterday. After our training session Echo was headed to her truck with her prize, the pillow with me in tow, barely able to rein her in and keep up. Thank goodness I hadn't just let her go & let her run back to the truck on her own, although very it was very tempting as it was hot and I was tired. The neighbors had company who brought a great dane with them and he was off leash and charged the fence between the properties. I thought he was coming over the fence and they were scrambling to get to him and hold him back. Echo dragged me towards him until I could get my feet planted and stop her. She wasn't taking any of his lip! She charged him and had a few words of her own to say to him. I finally got her attention and got her to jump up into the pickup truck where she then leaned over and continued barking at him on his level. They got a hold of the dane and led him away with apologies and I got Echo calmed down and into her crate. WHEW! Never a dull moment. At least I know she is no coward! That was one HUGE dog.

That was nothing compared to the weekend before...but my dog wasn't involved in it. Everyone keeps their dogs on leash when not on the field. We have two 4mo pups in the club, littermates who entertain us off field wrestling and such. Often their sire is there and he loves playing with the pups so they are used to taking on a big dog. Well, daddy wasn't there but another big male was and they were doing the big dog down in platz greet & meet with the male pup when little man decides to growl at the big dog. Now we all know that normally this would result in the big dog rolling the young pup over with a good snarl and lots of submissive peeing and that's it. Well, puppy's owner freaked and stuck his hand in there to save his pup and somehow, someway in all the commotion the big dog's lead clipped to the puppy's collar ring as if they had been clasped together like that on purpose and then the puppy's leash wrapped around the snap several times. This was the story told to me as I was several vehicles away getting Echo ready for bite work What I heard was a puppy screaming, people screaming & yelling and the big dog's roar. I dropped what I was doing and ran towards the rucus. I find the owner of the big dog holding his dog up by his pinch yelling "AUS!!" over and over. The puppy hanging in the air screaming his little head off. The big dog snapping at everything while growling ferociously. Several people standing around, freaking out. The puppy's owner yelling for somebody to help him while blood drips from his right hand. I step up behind the big dog and start sweet talking him, telling him good boy while staying out of reach of those jaws. I unwrap the leashes only to find the one snap on both collars. Puppy's owner yelling for a knife but that's all we needed was to cut that leash and have big dog loose with no control with a puppy hanging from his neck. The club president stuck a whip handle into the big dog's mouth while I grabbed his hind legs and someone managed to slip the puppy out of his collar and the big dog swung around, saw it was me on his back legs and just collasped on the ground. WHEW!!!! The puppy had a small knot on his chin and a pinprick scratch beneath one eye but no worse for wear. His owner had several deep scratches over the top of his hand. I refuse to call them bites because if the big dog had really clamped down he would have broken bones and deep gashes to the bone. (I've seen real bites and this wasn't real) Someone bandaged up puppy's owner and when he came down off his adrenaline high he decided to go home and let the pup play with his sire so he wouldn't be fearful of big dogs. Actually the puppy seemed the least disturbed by the whole thing. The big dog got over it immediately and cuddled up to me later. Man...all this running and excitement is hard on an old fat lady!
