I am from Taiwan and I am looking for a German Shepherd from Germany. This is my first time doing so. I might need to select a younger dog and continue training by the breeder until it completes SChH2 or 3.

Can anyone give me some advise on:

1) how much deposit do they normally ask for? what is the normal payment terms?
2) what will happen if the dog becomes sick or injuried? Will I be responsible for the medical fee or will I have to take the dog regardless? ( because officially speaking, i purchased the dog already)
3) what will happen if the dog cannot complete the exam?
4) Do you think purchasing this way is safe? Do you think I would encounter a lot of problems?
5) Is there anything I should watch out for when dealing with the breeder?
6) could anyone who had experience buying GSD from overseas share their experience with me? The biggest problem is I cannot see the dog myself and i know normally it is best to be able to interact with the dog before deciding if he is the right one .

I would really appriciate all the help i could get on this.

Hi,

I am from india and i very recently bought a 10 week puppy from Germany and one of the finest breeders in the world. As i wanted a puppy more for training i had approached this breeder since sometime as they are the best in HGH, they are known worldwide which i realised on the net itself also they have a history of more than 6 decades. There are similar breeders too but you need to really really search.
answers:

1. i personally beleive that some advance is necessary. Rest on delivery, though i paid all advance as they are a family to me, and it is a priviledge to get a puppy from them.
2. i guess it's not right for you to pay the medical bill as the dog is still with the breeder, even if you paid.
3. Since you have a condition that you wanted a Sch 2 or 3 completed and you must have paid taking this into consideration, the onus lies with the breeder.
4. i would not buy a trained dog unless i have that kind of experience.
5. Read, research and if you really love a dog, then go yourself and get him, isn't he a part of our family?
6. Yes you should go specially since you want a trained one.

God Bless,

aviniti.

My oppinion - point by point to your questions:

1) how much deposit do they normally ask for? what is the normal payment terms?
The dog which you will agree on would in 99% of times have to be bought outright and then the dog will be placed or kept on for completing his/her training at an agreed additional charge.

2) what will happen if the dog becomes sick or injuried? Will I be responsible for the medical fee or will I have to take the dog regardless? ( because officially speaking, i purchased the dog already)
This is something that you may have to outline with the seller; however in most cases you will find that the liability will not be taken either by the seller and/or trainer from the time the dog has changed ownership. Ask about insurance so as at least you may recover a part if not all of your outlay (should something go wrong)

3) what will happen if the dog cannot complete the exam?
This you will have to pre-agree with the seller and have all in writting.

4) Do you think purchasing this way is safe? Do you think I would encounter a lot of problems?
Crossing the road is not safe but we still do it!! Make sure you cross all the "T's" and dot all the "I's and put all your prerequisits in the open and be realistic. You will find that if the dog and seller are correct you will get through your project without surprises.

5) Is there anything I should watch out for when dealing with the breeder?
Its been well documented on database!!

6) could anyone who had experience buying GSD from overseas share their experience with me? The biggest problem is I cannot see the dog myself and i know normally it is best to be able to interact with the dog before deciding if he is the right one .
Too many to list here..some excellent some bad; but in general very good and thats why we keep on going!

One of the first things I was told is BE CAREFUL.

If you buy a puppy, of course it will be untrained, but if you buy an older dog, BE CAREFUL.  Dogs are sometimes sold with titles, and they never really earned the titles.  They might even be good dogs, certainly capable of earning the titles, but it's so easy for cheaters to sell these dogs out of the country to people who don't know the sport.

I know a good breeder here in the U.S.  She showed me a gorgeous SchH3 import.  She told me that when he came to her in the U.S. as a titled SchH3, he didn't even know what "Platz" meant.  He is a a wonderful dog, and has been trained now, and has competed at the SchH3 level here.  But she knew what she was doing and knew the dog was a good dog and got him and trained him; however, she had no illusions that his German Sch3 was anything but a fake.

 TessJ10,

Oh boy, i didn't even considered that! I thought all the dog has their number, and when they attend the show, they receive score that will be put on their paper with the judges signing. Don't they check the dog number before awarding them score?? how could that happen!!

 Apoamarni,

Could you recommend some of the reputable breeder in Germany??
Seems like you have a lot of experiences and knowledge and i would really appriciate your help!!

Of course, if it doesn't went well, i wouldn't blame you for it :)

 Aviniti,

could you let me know which breeder you brought from? maybe I could try to contact them and see if there is some possibility to work with them :)

The way I see it and I have bought a great number of dogs (which I could name) from many countries in Europe over the years going back to the time when even a good quality picture was hard to come by - but that is not the point!!

There are a great number of good/sound breeders and owners of dogs that sell them for legit reasons.

There are also a greater number of time wasters who ask for a million things just to satisfy their curiosity with no real intent on buying as they know from the outset - when the price of a particular dog has been quoted - that they don't have it to spend.

In your country as well neighboring countries...people have been buying dogs for many years from Europe and other countries and I would guess that 99% are satisfied customers as they keep coming back.

As for your requesting videos - whilst you may have all the right intent and good will to go through with the purchase - its the others above mentioned who make it difficult for you!

Coupled with the fact that it is not as easy to make videos as not everyone is in possession of the quality equipment to do this or has the know how to make a quality one and/or has the time to combine with man power needed and the right weather.

I do agree with a lot said with regard to; if you want to be absolutely 100% sure you must visit the kennels yourself and make up your mind in person. Even then you will be taking a certain risk but at least you did so with your own eyes.

Trying to have your mind made up like this will only confuse you more...because everyone who has actualy bought dogs from Europe in numbers (some I immagine have not and just going on what they have heard)  on this board have relationships and contacts whom they have had for years...again you will be stuck with the dilemma - which one of those to choose from.

Hi Babyblue,

The breeder i got from is Kirschental and the experience of herding (HGH) is since 1951. I was priviledged to meet both Marion and Karl when i went to get my puppy in April 2010.
They are very honest, genuine and clear on the requirements of a buyer, they guided me on my requirements.

Can anyone give me some advise on:

1) how much deposit do they normally ask for? what is the normal payment terms?
500 deposit and balance before shipping.

2) what will happen if the dog becomes sick or injured? Will I be responsible for the medical fee or will I have to take the dog regardless? ( because officially speaking, i purchased the dog already)

dogs and puppies are check by vet before shipping and you typically have 72 hours to take to vet after arrival

3) what will happen if the dog cannot complete the exam?
breeder should work with you to resolve any major health issues.

4) Do you think purchasing this way is safe? Do you think I would encounter a lot of problems?
you have to do your research and find the trusted kennels and exporters.......many of places are a rip-off. If the deal seems too good to be true, is most likely is. good dogs are not cheap.

5) Is there anything I should watch out for when dealing with the breeder?
someone who agrees too much!

6) could anyone who had experience buying GSD from overseas share their experience with me? The biggest problem is I cannot see the dog myself and i know normally it is best to be able to interact with the dog before deciding if he is the right one .
Some experienced breeders are able to match people with dogs very well. By being truthfull with yourself and the breeder about your experience, and the time you have to work your dog, if you are with a training club, what you want to do with your dog...... a good breeder can usually make a good match.............for instance (I'm bragging a bit here).

Dear Kim,

I could not be happier with Drago Jr. He is absolutely PERFECT! The vet and his assistants LOVED him. His temper is calm, but, as with any pup, full of energy! I can barely keep up. Josef and Taunya Mravik did a WONDERFUL job training him. He is SOOO well behaved! I can't believe it sometimes.

I would like to personally thank you for all of your help. You were absolutely fantastic and I appreciate all the advice you have given me, helping me feel more comfortable during the purchasing process. In a world of fake web sites and thieves and scoundrels, you surely made this online purchase as easy as possible. From beginning to end, you were there to help me and, for that, I could never thank you enough.

I have attached a picture or two for you to see how BEAUTIFUL he is. I will try to send you more as he gets older and will definitely keep in touch.

Thank you once again,
Christian H.
