I know many feed beef, chicken for protien. I was curious as to wether it would be safe or healthy to supplement with raw fish? I love to fish for sunfish, crappie, etc. all freshwater fish. I dont generally keep them because they are sorta small and hard to clean, but I thought - what if the dogs could eat them?

NOT INTENTIONALLY!!!!

My husband had some nice fish in his fish basket in the creek .  He took a break shoreline intending on doing some more fishing later in the day so he just left the basket in the water.

I came down with several of our german shepherds with the kids to do some swimming .  I hear a ruckus and the dogs "playing" across the creek.  You guessed it they got into the fish basket and had some lovely "Sushi"  .   Ate every bit of those fish!

I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who loves raw flounder fillet, better than red meat.  She also likes apples and green beans, lol.  The German Shepherds will eat it some, with an "if I have to attitude", but deffinately don't prefer it.  Just FYI .  . I don't know the details, but my dad had an American Bulldog die from eating fish heads.  Knowing him he probably swallowed them whole, but not sure.  So just be really careful with the bones and cleanings. Even fillets will have the occasional bone.

You have to be very careful about feeding raw fish due to parasites and mercury.

gsdshow has a good point, be careful but if you would eat the fish out of the lake, river or stream you are catching them in. then they will be good for the dogs. I would also cut off the dorsal (top) and pectoral fins  (sides), some are sharp and have spines and can hurt the dog. especially on catfish, even crappies.

gsdshow, all you have to do is freeze it for a few days and then it's fine. Mine eat it whenever I can get it and so far nobody has died.

Thanks VomMarischal,  I did not know that.  I live in Utah and we have a very big problem with Whirling disease here, and also high levels of mercury.

ACK! Mercury in Utah??? I don't know anything about that! But that's nothing to do with RAWNESS, is it?
